Stotts-phelps-McQueary Funeral home expands

McMurtrey Funeral Home in Summer Shade announced that they are selling their business to a Columbia owner.

They shared that after several talks with potential buyers, they felt Jeff Jessie with Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia will keep the funeral home similar to what patrons have known these past 95 years.

Veterans Banners will start being placed this week for 2023

Banners will start being hung this week in honor of veterans in our community. The service for dedication will be at 9amCT on Friday, May 26, 2023, at City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY. Those veterans are from the Vietnam War, Korean War, World War I, World War II, and active duty.

Auditions on May 23 for Addams Family Musical

The Harold Chambers Theater Troupe will hold auditions for our next musical, "The Addams Family Musical," at 7pmCT on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Metcalfe County Public Library, 200 S Main St, Edmonton, KY.

If you would like a solo singing part, please prepare a one minute song. You will also do a cold read. We will need dancers to be the Addams family ancestors. If interested, you will learn a sample dance for your audition.

"The Addams Family Musical" will be presented in October. For more information, please contact director Emily Coffey at 270-670-4758.

Dates set for 5th annual Truck It Up and Paint the Town

The 5th annual Truck It Up food truck event will be held in Columbia on Friday, August 4, in conjunction with the August "To The Nines."

If you have a food truck that would like to attend, please contact Sydney Strange at City Hall by calling 270-384-2501.

The 5th annual "Paint the Town" will be that same week, starting on August 1, 2023. Judging will take place on Friday, August 4, 2023. Anyone wanting to participate in "Paint the Town" can contact Tiffany Collins at 270-384-2501 to be put on the list for a space to be reserved.

"We appreciate everyone for caring about our community," said Mayor Pamela Hoots.

Norman Bell, 76, Columbia, KY (1947-2023)

Norman Dean Bell of Columbia passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at his residence. He was 76 years old.

Military honors, provided by VFW Post 6097, will be held at 2pmCT on Friday, May 19, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green, KY.

Visitation will be on Friday from 11amCT until time for the service at 2pmCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

ACSO: Tennessee man arrested on drug charges

On Sunday, May 14, 2023, at 11:50pmCT, Chief Deputy Brandon Hitch initiated a traffic stop on a 2003 Nissan Altima 8 miles north of Columbia on KY 55.

The operator was found to be operating on a suspended drivers license. After further investigation, he was found to be in possession of illegal substances.

SS Founder's Day celebration enjoyed by all

The 6th Annual Founder's Day celebration in Summer Shade was enjoyed by families, friends and neighbors with live music, great food, crafts, games for the young, and old all day.

It was a beautiful morning in the Shade as eye catching trucks, cars, tractors, and ATV'S lined up on Cemetery Road to be in this year's parade.

Little Free Library comes to Columbia

The City of Columbia is now a Charter member for the Little Free Library. According to their website, they have over 150,000 libraries in 120 countries with over 300 million books shared.

The local Little Free Library is located on the corner of Campbellsville Street and Reed Street, right beside Columbia's City Hall. The purpose of the Little Free Library is to take a book and share a book.

Click headline for full schedule of the week's activities, including the Senior Parade, Senior Breakfast, Senior Walkthrough, the baccalaureate program, graduation practice, Senior Awards Night, Graduation, and Project Graduation.

Beginning Monday, seniors or their guardians can stop by the ACHS front office to pick up the needed information to get tickets for the graduation ceremony. Each senior is given 10 tickets to give to whomever they would like to invite to the ceremony. Tickets are required for all guests over age 3.

Once the ticket information sheet is picked up, tickets must be claimed online by 6pmCT on Wednesday. Tickets that are not claimed will be made available to the public at 8amCT on Thursday morning.

Letter: Payroll tax

Ann Pearson writes:
I don't think those of us who live in Adair should have to pay the county to allow us to work here. I understand when you work in another county but not in your own. We still haven't heard how much longer we have to pay the "hospital tax". This doesn't need to turn into one of those things that never ends.

Ann, thank you for joining the voices discussing the pros and cons of a new tax for Adair Countians. The "hospital tax" is due to end on December 31, 2025. There are questions about loans that were taken out by the county, however, that may be tied to the hospital bankruptcy. We will continue researching in the months ahead to see how much change there can be.

Basketball Camp for K-6 students in July

Coach Deron Breeze Basketball Camp is set for Monday July 24 through Wednesday July 26, 2023, from 8:30amCT to 11:45amCT daily, at John Burr Memorial Gymnasium, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY, on the campus of Adair County Schools. Camp will be for boys and girls entering grades K - 6th during the 2023-24 school year.

Pre-Register at https://forms.gle/aUASE5cvsbwcb1mh8. Pre-Registration before July 10th will assure you the correct shirt size for camp. The price is $45 for individual registrations and $35 for siblings. No payments will be accepted until the first day of camp.

Southern Rock's Finest, along with opening act Cheyenne, will perform beginning at 6pmCT/7pmET on Friday June 30, 2023, on the Commonwealth Building Products Main Stage on South Court Street in downtown Campbellsville. The concert is free.

Earline Bryant of Glasgow died on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 3:00 A.M. at the home of her brother and sister-in-law. She was 94 years old.

ACSO: Collision claims the life of Adair Co. man

On Friday, May 12, 2023, Adair County 911 received a call of a two-vehicle collision with injuries on KY 61 south approximately 5 miles south of Columbia.

Upon deputies' arrival they found that two vehicles had collided head-on, and one of the two drivers was unresponsive with severe injuries.
