A Sailor Named Phart

By Throckmorton J. Trout

My father served in the U.S. Navy and once told me a story that I still, to this day, wonder if it is true or not. It involved a fellow sailor who had a rather interesting last name. The sailor's name was "Phart," and whenever they called his name during a formation or otherwise, it never failed to generate a few chuckles through the ranks.

My father told me this story while driving somewhere, and it started a larger conversation on the typically silly topic of flatulence. But before this happened, I did have the foresight to ask him at least a few questions "Why didn't he just change his name?" Seemed like a good solution.

Lest we forget

By JIM

Eighty years ago this month -- Valentine's Day, 1943 -- the Allied and German armies met in their first major engagement of the war in a bloody, days-long battle in the rugged North African hills of western Tunisia. This conflict, the Battle of Kasserine Pass, finally ended on the 25th with the Allied troops in control of the area, but at such a horrific cost it could hardly be deemed a victory. There were over 10,000 Allied casualties (killed, wounded, missing in action, and prisoners of war) with well over half of that number coming from the American troops.

Among the multitude of soldiers taken as prisoners of war was 29-year-old Pvt (later Sgt) Charlie Beard of the Milltown section. He had volunteered for armed service in June 1940 and was in the first wave of U.S. troops to land in North Africa in the fall of '42.

Pvt Beard was first reported as missing in action, but not until the forepart of May did his mother hear directly from him via a letter dated several weeks earlier. His letter, published in the May 12, 1943 Adair County News, read in part,

Cross country road trip with stops in ten states

By Rebecca Montgomery

In the fall of 2022, I got the exciting opportunity to intern as a Natural Resource Management Assistant at Redwood National Park in northern California.

The job entailed field work in forests and streams throughout the park, but first I had to get to California.

Finally, a good excuse for a cross-country road trip! The journey took three weeks and spread across 10 states, with plenty of stops to see some of the many amazing sights and natural wonders along the way.
