Spring Wildfire Hazard Season is Feb 15-Apr 30

From John Mura/Robin Hartman

Frankfort, KY - The Spring Wildfire Hazard Season throughout Kentucky begins today, February 15, 2023, and lasts until April 30. The law prohibits any person from burning between the hours of 6am and 6pm within 150 feet of any woodland or brushland.

The Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF) urges residents across the state to exercise caution when burning debris, and to consider all factors to help maximize the safety of people, property and the forest.

"There is more moisture in the soil compared to last fall when we were in a drought, but the leaves and fuel on the ground quickly dry on sunny, windy days," said Division of Forestry Director / State Forester Brandon Howard. "In many areas we are still recovering from last year's natural disasters which have resulted in more fuel if a wildfire occurs. We ask that if debris burning occurs, take proper precautions to prevent fires from escaping and becoming wildfires. And as always, report any suspected arson activity to local law enforcement."

March and April are typically high wildfire occurrence months, but the division has already responded to 116 wildland fires since January 1.

Governor signs funding for completion of BG Veterans Center

From Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the State Capitol, Gov. Andy Beshear joined a bipartisan group of lawmakers to sign House Bill 2. The measure provides much-needed support to complete the Bowling Green Veterans Center, which will provide compassionate care for Kentucky's veterans.

In November 2022, Gov. Beshear joined federal, state and local leaders to break ground on the Bowling Green Veterans Center. House Bill 2 dedicates an additional $16,630,000 in fiscal year 2022-2023 from the Budget Reserve Trust Fund to previously appropriated budget items to complete construction of the $53 million Veterans Center in Bowling Green. The center is expected to be completed in 2024.

The Veterans Center will create 120 new jobs and will be the state's fifth long-term skilled nursing care facility. The 80,000-square-foot facility will provide 60 beds and is being built on 25 acres donated by the Inter-Modal Transportation Authority at the Kentucky Transpark in Warren County.

Kentucky Proud CSA Week event is Feb 20-24

From Lisa Tolliver

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky Proud, the official agricultural marketing brand of the state, is co-hosting Kentucky Proud Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) Week, Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles announced on February 14, 2023.

The long-standing CSA model of purchasing shares or subscriptions directly from local farms gained more popularity throughout the pandemic when supply chain issues created inconsistent availability on store shelves. Kentucky farms met the demand for consumers' needs and increased affinity for fresh from the farm food. Community supported agriculture farms are an ideal model for consumers to connect to locally grown farm products. The event is set for February 20-24, 2023.

To participate in Kentucky Proud CSA Week, visit the Facebook group. Additional information as well as a listing of all Kentucky Proud CSA farms can be found at kyproud.com/campaigns/community-supported-agriculture.

Severe storms possible tonight through Thursday

Mike Keltner, Director of Adair Co. Emergency Management, sends word of the Wednesday morning update from the National Weather Service in Louisville, KY, about the possibility of severe storms.

A strong low pressure system will lift a warm front northward through the region late Wednesday night, resulting in showers and scattered thunderstorms overnight. Best precipitation chances likely come around or after midnight, with hail as the main threat for tonight. Damaging winds and tornado risk are limited tonight, but conditions could evolve that would support better chances for these two hazards.

On Thursday, the convective outlook has been upgraded to an Enhanced Risk for severe weather - a level 3 out of 5. Thunderstorms will be ongoing at daybreak Thursday morning, but we'll likely see a break in storm activity by the late morning hours.

The main window for severe weather comes Thursday afternoon ahead of the approaching cold front, where damaging winds will be the primary hazard, but hail and tornadoes are also on the table.
