City Council to meet Monday, February 6

The Columbia City Council will meet in regular session at 6pmCT on Monday, February 6, 2023, in City Hall, 116 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY.

Items on the agenda include bid approvals for a fence for the splash pad and a truck for the Gas Department and an update from Fire Chief Tyler Solum.

Lawsuit filed by former AJDC employees

James Roberts calls our attention this morning to a news story on WBKO Channel 13 on a lawsuit having been filed in federal court over the situation at the Adair Youth Detention Center in Columbia.

Meanwhile, a group of Kentucky lawmakers are calling for a change in leadership within the state's juvenile justice system, according to an article posted this morning at wymt.com.

Gov. Beshear announced in his weekly update on Thursday that Kentucky State Police will soon be placed at all three high-security facilities in Adair County, Fayette County and Warren County 24-7 until personnel reach a safer point.

Metcalfe 1 of 14 counties awarded grants to clean illegal dumps

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear and Kentucky Energy and Environment (EEC) Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman announced on Feb. 2, 2023, approximately $534,000 in grants for the cleanup of 62 illegal dumps in 14 counties across the commonwealth.

The grants will be used in the following counties and sites: Butler (4), Calloway, Carlisle, Christian (2), Hart (3), Hopkins, Johnson (4), Lawrence (4), Logan, Metcalfe, Pike (10), Scott, Warren and Wolfe (28).

The grant funding is used to clean sites where household solid waste such as couches, tires, coolers and bedding has been illegally dumped. Not only are these dumps an eyesore in municipalities, but they can be a health hazard due to exposed debris and vermin. Once cleaned, the sites offer locations for revenue-producing businesses.

Tennis: LWC heads to Kansas for ITA NAIA NTI Championship

The Lindsey Wilson men's and women's tennis team prepare to compete in ITA NAIA National Team Indoor Championships, taking on No. 2 Keiser (FL) in the first round in Overland Park, KS, hosted by Kansas Wesleyan University, to transpire on Feb. 3 through 5, 2023.

Bringing in the top NAIA programs from across the country, the teams participating on the men's side include Georgia Gwinnett, Indiana Wesleyan, Kansas Wesleyan, Keiser, Xavier (LA), Tennessee Wesleyan, and Northwestern Ohio. The women's side includes the same first five teams from the men's side but LSU Alexandria, SCAD Savannah (GA) round out the field.

Eliza Creola Biggs, 85, Adair Co., KY native (1937-2023)

Eliza Creola (Cox) Biggs of Greensburg died on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Norton Healthcare Pavilion Hosparus Inpatient Unit in Louisville. She was 85 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 11amCT on Thursday, February 2, 2023, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville Street, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Lanny Garner officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Visitation is requested after 5pmCT on Wednesday. The family requests that all attendees to the visitation and/or funeral wear a facial covering.

Elnora Burton of Edinburgh, Indiana, passed away January 31, 2023, at Franciscan Health of Indianapolis, Indiana. She was 88 years old.

A funeral service will be conducted by Reverend Randy Denton at 2pmET on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at Who-So-Ever-Will Community Church, 623 S Eisenhower Dr, Edinburgh, IN. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Cemetery in Edinburgh.

T.J. Samson Women's Conference registration now open

National Civics Bee coming to Campbellsville University

Campbellsville, KY - Essays, quizzes and more will be coming to Campbellsville University with the announcement of the Campbellsville/Taylor County Chamber of Commerce being selected as a National Civics Bee host.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the National Civics Bee is an annual competition for middle school students that "encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities."

The competition has three phases.

First, interested students are asked to submit a 500-word essay by Friday, Feb. 24, identifying and explaining a problem their community is facing, how others view the problem, what civic principles or systems could help address the issue, an idea or recommendation to solve it, what primary sources support the civic proposal and how the community could bring the concept to life.

Essays can be submitted online at civics.uschamberfoundation.org or mailed to Greg Gribbins, 205 N. Columbia Ave., Campbellsville, KY 42718.

Family Literacy classes offered in February

The Adair County Extension office will be offering Family Literacy Classes throughout the month of February.

The first session will be held at 9amCT on Monday, February 6, 2023, at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. The first session will cover the scope of the classes as well as resources provided by the Extension Office and Adult Education. Future sessions will include how to save money at the grocery store, positive parenting, and preparing healthy meals, among other topics.

Anyone with an interest in these topics are encouraged to attend. The classes are free, but RSVP is requested at the extension office by calling (270) 384-2317.

I wanted to take a moment to share and brag on my incredible business and marketing students. Last Thursday, all of my (140) students, took their knowledge and expertise to the gym for their "Market Day".

On this day, they launched their businesses they had created, expanded on their inventions, defended their knowledge and implemented their skills to nearly 40 community leaders who served as "sharks" and "investors" - to say this day was any thing less than incredible would be an understatement.

Mr. Dixie Payne "Shorty" Hamilton passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 in Campbellsville. He was 89 years old.

John Alan Osborne, 64, Russell County, KY

John Alan Osborne, 64, of Russell Springs, KY passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 at his home.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a retired pastry chef better known as the "Donut Man." He was born in Russell Springs on December 29, 1958, a son of Brenda (Wesley) Wilson, of Jamestown, KY and the late John W. Osborne.

Swimming: LWC gears up for MSC Championships

The Lindsey Wilson men's and women's swimming teams are set to compete at the Mid-South Conference Championship Thursday through Saturday, February 2-4, 2023, at the Kingsport Aquatic Center in Kingsport, Tennessee.

Along with the Blue Raiders, Bethel (TN), Campbellsville (KY), Cumberlands (KY), Indiana Wesleyan, Midway (KY), Pikeville (KY), Shawnee State (OH) and Tennessee Southern will all be competing for the championship.

Swimming begins at 8amCT on all three days with the preliminary heats followed by the final heats at 4:30pmCT on Thursday and Friday as Saturday takes place at 4pmCT.

Clayton James Arnett, 83, Green County, KY

Clayton James Arnett of Greensburg, Kentucky, son of the late Lewis T. Arnett and Mary Goldie Nelson Arnett, was born Saturday, September 9, 1939 in Taylor County, Kentucky and departed this life on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 at his home. He was 83 years, 4 months, and 22 days of age.

He had made a profession of faith in Christ and attended Holly Grove Baptist Church. He was a tractor mechanic for many years and worked at the John Deere Garage in Greensburg and Hardyville.
