Letter: Grandmother's collapsible cup

Joyce Reliford writes:
Carol, I have my grandmother's collapsible cup. She was born in 1914.

As a small girl she carried it in her purse and we drank out of it instead of directly out of a fountain.

Still a very fond memory for me!!! Thanks, Joyce

History shared about Moore's Pool Room building

Here's information on the history of the building on the square that caused readers to inquire about the sign 'bakery' above what is now home to Moore's Pool Room. Everyone is trying to remember when there might have ever been a bakery there, but for now we have memories of the other businesses that have located here.

By Ralph Roy Waggener

My oldest Brother had a bowling alley there when I was very young, only remember being there a couple of times!

Ralph Shearer has told me of setting pins there and how dangerous it was!

Later on My brother-in-law LG "Peanut" McKinley and my dad EP started M&W Auto Parts there and Joe Johnson had his radio repair shop there and helped with parts sales!

From Maggie Coleman, Treasurer
J.O.Y. Ministries

In the past month, J.O.Y. Ministries has seen a large increase in homelessness and those on the borderline of homelessness in our community. We are looking for partners in serving the least of these. You can help by sharing your change in our "J.O.Y. Jars." God can multiply small things and He can use us to make a big difference! (Luke 21:1-4)

We will be delivering jars to local businesses and schools in the area. If you are a local business, please call J.O.Y. at 270-380-1808 and leave a message letting us know you want a jar. We will get one to you ASAP. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call our office at 270-380-1808. Thank you for your support of J.O.Y. Ministries as we seek to provide food, shelter, clothing, and hope to all in our community!

From John Hicks/Greg Harkenrider

Frankfort, KY - State Budget Director John Hicks reported on Monday, September 12, 2022, that General Fund receipts increased 6.6 percent in August compared to last year. Total revenues for the month were $999.2 million, compared to $937.7 million during August 2021. So far this fiscal year (FY23), General Fund receipts have increased 8.2 percent. Based on Augusts' results, receipts can decline by 8.6 percent for the remainder of the fiscal year and still meet the official estimate.

Director Hicks observed that the General Fund revenues continued their growth trend, rising 6.6 percent over last August, which had grown 12.5 percent over August of 2020. "General Fund receipts in August are typically heavily weighted by sales and withholding collections, which made up 86.0 percent of the revenues for the month. Sales and use tax receipts continued their trend of double-digit monthly increases with growth of 12.6 percent in August. Withholding grew by 4.4 percent and 7.8 percent for the year. With two months in the books for FY23, the General Fund stands at 8.2 percent growth."

Letter: Still has collapsible cup

BJ Hagy writes:
I recently read Carol Perkins' story on Columbia Magazine "Memories of Recess," which read, in part:
"At the end of recess, we lined up at the water fountain and drank from our handmade paper cups. Someone had a tin collapsible cup that shut down like an accordion and popped up when ready for the water. I don't know who brought it, but I thought it was cool."
I'm not sure what age Carol Perkins is but I'd venture to say in her late 60s, maybe younger because we didn't have a water fountain where I started school. I went to 1st Grade in the school at Pellyton, KY, which is about 17 miles from Columbia, KY. It was a two-room schoolhouse. This would have been around 1960. I don't believe Carol and I went to school together, if we did then my memory is shot because I cannot place knowing her. However, I was one kid of probably many that had one of those small tin, "collapsible" cups. In fact, it not was not only collapsible, but it also had a cover that you could put over the rim to keep out any foreign material that might invade it.

Here I am a 68-year-old and I still have my collapsible cup with cover. It sits on a small shelf in our kitchen. It's still a "cool" cup as Carol states. I'd be happy to sell it for $5,000 to the first person to offer it. It clearly is an antique and I doubt they even have one in the Smithsonian Museum.
