Albert J. Franklin added to KLEMF Monument

By Kelly Foreman

Richmond, KY - On Thursday, May 26, 2022, Gov. Andy Beshear, along with the Kentucky Law Enforcement Memorial Foundation (KLEMF) and the Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT), honored the Kentucky law enforcement officers who lost their lives in 2021 in service to the commonwealth.

The Governor said that 12 officer names have been added to the KLEMF monument this year including five historical honorees. Among the historical honorees was Metcalfe County Deputy Sheriff Albert J. Franklin, end of watch Nov. 11, 1913.

"It is truly a selfless sacrifice when one voluntarily chooses to wear the badge of honor that places them in dangerous and unpredictable situations," Gov. Beshear said during the 22nd annual memorial ceremony. "Today, we show our appreciation for these officers' heroism, and we recognize that our public safety, our freedom and our prosperity were bought at a price."

Letter: Perhaps an insect?

Marie Freeman writes
Found another photo very similar to yours, believed to be an insect? But yours might be worth reporting to them for further evaluation: www.ufosnw.com. Consensus on the site was that the object in the photo is likely an insect. The long exposure of the camera set at night produces a multi-second shot of the insect.

Remembering Marsha Roberts

From James and Jamison Roberts

It's been a year since you went home to be with the Lord on May 29th, 2021. We have missed you so much. We know with certainty that we will meet again. That's the only hope in this world that we have. It seems only yesterday that you left us. We see things everyday that you had something to do with or changed or touched that makes us either smile, laugh or cry. Sometimes all three.

We will cherish our time that we all had here and look forward to seeing you again as promised someday. Wife, Mother, Friend to so many.

Marsha Roberts, 57, Columbia, KY (1964-2021)

Doom Awaits Those Who Ignore Plain Instructions

By Mike Watson

"Doom Awaits Those Who Ignore Plain Instructions" -- This is exactly the thought that ran through my head Wednesday afternoon as I turned up West Frazier Street from Burkesville Street.

Why? Well, for the third time in as many weeks I met someone intending to exit W. Frazier onto Burkesville. This is a one-way from the top of the street down to Burkesville Street. I have seen it many times over the years and there have been accidents at the intersection with Burkesville Street.

Letter: What is the number?

Rodney White writes:
Critical mass theory loosely applied in a social context means that at some point when a sufficient number of people adopt or accept a new idea, then a change happens. I wonder what the number of children murdered in their classrooms has to be, or what number of worshippers in a mosque, synagogue, or church murdered has to be, or how many mass shootings across America have to happen before this country decides to change? Or, is there no number? If not, why? Respectfully, Rodney White

Kentucky to extend Medicaid, CHIP postpartum coverage

By Susan Dunlap

Frankfort, KY - In an effort to improve maternal and child health outcomes and increase access to life-saving health care services for more Kentuckians, Gov. Beshear announced on Wednesday that Kentucky's request to expand Medicaid coverage to a full 12-month postpartum period has been approved by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"Ensuring the health and safety of mothers and children is critically important not only for Kentucky families, but in building a brighter and healthier future for our commonwealth," Gov. Beshear said. "We have made great strides over the past few years to expand health coverage for Kentuckians, but we must do more, and we are grateful for the opportunity to expand care to more women under the Medicaid program."

Kentucky joins three other states - California, Florida and Oregon - in recently obtaining approval from CMS and is among a handful of states that have opted to expand postpartum coverage for women, which is critical in addressing health issues that can affect women and children in the period following childbirth.
