Bill offering remote instruction days advances

By Nancy Royden, LRC

Frankfort, KY - Lawmakers in the Kentucky Senate approved legislation Tuesday that would provide up to 10 days of remote instruction in the current academic year and help address critical staff shortages in public schools.

The measure - Senate Bill 25 - passed off the Senate floor with a 31-2 vote and now heads to the House for consideration.

The bill's primary sponsor, Sen. Max Wise, R-Campbellsville, said the high priority for education is to maximize in-person learning as much as possible.

Letter: Remembering Tracey Pierce

JR Thompson writes:
It has been a very hard day for our ACHS family with the loss and passing of our registrar and precious friend, Tracey Pierce.

She was a testimony of the goodness of Jesus to those who trust in Him as their savior each and everyday. She made a deep impact on our school family and my life personally. I'm a better person because of Tracey.

I've wept today but smiled when I found a Facebook video of her singing to Jesus during a White's Ridge Church service recently. I imagine (today) she picked right up where she left off that Sunday as soon as she sees Jesus face-to-face.

Precious in the sight of the LORD is the death of his saints. - Psalm 116:15
Until we meet again, enjoy heaven!

USDA loans available for agricultural storm damage

Adair, Casey, Green, Metcalfe, and Taylor Counties are among those eligible for low-interest loans in response to December 2021 storms. The deadline to apply for the loans is Aug. 30, 2022.

By Sean Southard

Frankfort, KY - Several Kentucky counties affected by the December 2021 storms that produced tornadoes and high winds in Western Kentucky are now eligible for low-interest loans from the U.S. Department of Agricultural (USDA), Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture Dr. Ryan Quarles recently announced.

The loan-interest loans offered by USDA are for physical losses and can help producers repair or replace damaged or destroyed physical property essential to the success of the agricultural operation, including livestock losses. Examples of property commonly affected include essential farm buildings, fixtures to real estate, equipment, livestock, perennial crops, fruit and nut bearing trees, and harvested or stored crops and hay.

On farmers.gov, the Disaster Assistance Discovery Tool, Disaster Assistance-at-a-Glance fact sheet, and Farm Loan Discovery Tool can help determine program or loan options. To file a Notice of Loss or to ask questions about available programs, contact your local USDA Service Center.

KY AG urges FCC to act on illegal international robocalls

By Elizabeth Kuhn

Frankfort, KY - On January 10, 2022, Attorney General Daniel Cameron sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) urging the agency to adopt measures to reduce the number of illegal international robocalls, which often lead to scam attempts on Kentuckians. The comment letter to the FCC was joined by a bipartisan coalition of 51 attorneys general.

"Illegal robocalls lead to frustration for Kentucky consumers and are often scam attempts that can result in significant financial losses," said Attorney General Cameron. "Joining this letter is one part of our concentrated effort to protect Kentuckians from the harm associated with fraudulent calls, and I am grateful to my fellow attorneys general for partnering with us on this initiative."

In their letter, the coalition calls for the FCC to require gateway providers - the companies that allow foreign calls into the United States - to take steps to reduce the number of robocalls that enter the U.S. telephone network. The attorneys general recommend gateway providers be required to implement STIR/SHAKEN anti-robocall protocols, a caller ID authentication technology that helps prevent spoofed calls, within 30 days of the FCC's adoption of the rule. This deadline will help eliminate spoofed calls and ensure international calls that originate from U.S. telephone numbers are legitimate.

LCDHD COVID-19 Public Information Brief January 10, 2022

By Sam Price
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

Due to the surge of COVID cases, as well as the recent weather-related closures and holidays, the health department is behind on getting cases investigated and contacted. As such, the nightly numbers and reports will be skewed until we can catch up.

LCDHD will be providing this abbreviated version of the report until further notice in an attempt to provide our communities with as much information as we can under these circumstances. Just know that as high as the cases are that we are reporting, there are many, many more that we have not yet been able to contact. There is a great deal of sickness in our communities at this time.

While we are seeing many respiratory and flu-like illnesses, there is certainly a significant increase in COVID cases being reported. It is now more important than ever that you consider getting vaccinated or boosted, if you have not done so. Wearing a mask that is snug and clean when in crowded public spaces and proper hand washing are critical.

If you have tested positive for COVID and have not been contacted by the health department, please follow the guidelines posted on our webpage and social media sites. You should use your positive test result paperwork as your proof, should you need documentation for a school or employer.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 26.33%.
All LCDHD Counties remain in the RED transmission category.
