Gov. Beshear reports highest ever COVID-19 case numbers

By Crystal Staley/Scottie Ellis

Frankfort, KY - Today, Gov. Andy Beshear updated Kentuckians on the COVID-19 omicron variant and the storms affecting Western, South Central and Eastern Kentucky on New Year's Day.

On Dec. 30, 6,441 cases were reported in Kentucky, the highest ever in a single day. The previous highest number was 5,742 cases reported Jan. 6, 2021. Today's test positivity rate, 20.72%, is the highest ever.

"The most important thing for everyone to hear today is that omicron has not only come to the commonwealth, it has hit us harder, in terms of escalation of cases, than anything we have seen to date," said Gov. Beshear. "We have gone from the plateau to the second highest week of reported cases since the start of the pandemic."

During the week ending Jan. 2, Kentucky reported 29,955 new COVID-19 cases and an average positivity rate of 20.38%. This is approximately twice the number of cases as were reported the week prior (15,255). This is also the second highest week of reported cases since the start of the pandemic, surpassed only by the week of Aug. 30, 2021 during the delta variant wave.

Letter: Recycling Center needs to be reopened

James Roberts writes to Fiscal Court:
I would like to know when we as a community can expect our recycling center to open back up for not only the needs of our citizens, but to keep in check how much recyclable waste is going into our landfills every week.

This issue was to be addressed after June, 2021 from what I understand.

Pulaski County has a very unique recycling system that includes not only cardboard, paper and plastics, but they also take glass and styrofoam products to.

They're making it work. So can we. I know that they are a larger county with more tax base. That should not be an excuse for us not to be doing the same thing also. Sometimes having a service for your citizens and community can mean that you have to break even or occasionally lose money.

I know that there are other areas in city and county services that don't always do well. That's just part of it. If things are budgeted right then the ones that are profitable can help offset the ones that are not.

You can start with using jail inmates, community volunteers and elected officials to sacrifice their time to make things work. That's what elected officials are supposed to to do. Serve not only the ones who voted for you, but all citizens! Just my opinion on this matter. - James Roberts
