Letter: Cemeteries will need attention after storms

James Roberts writes:
Jamison and I just left Haven Hill Cemetery and noticed a lot of flowers off the graves. We put back what we could on some of them. The City Cemetery got hit too. I'm most sure a lot of the county cemeteries need to be checked as well. - James

Health and Wealth and Luck should be in abundance...

Happy New Year from the Watsons!

By Mike Watson

It is mid-day, January 1st, 2022 A.D. as I sit at my desk, pecking away at my keyboard between a traditional morning meal for this special day, and the coming black eyed peas and cabbage that will come mid-afternoon, continuing the health-luck-wealth recipe for a Southerner's hoped-for good year to come.

Weather being what it seems to be today, hail in Adair County up to pea--and according to some reports, near golf ball sized pellets--the winds and rain continue. Waves of heavy rains, already flooding our streams to overflowing. Then, I re-discover an old news report...
The Louisville Daily Courier, 23 September 1868: From Amandaville, Cumberland County, dated 19 September 1868--"It has been raining nearly all the time during this month, and the creeks and Cumberland river have been up to high water marks for two weeks... An oil company at the mouth of Crocus creek, on the English farm, is now pumping and refining petroleum in large quantities. They are, also from the same well, making large quantities of salt of a superior quality. They are selling their refined oil at sixty cents per gallon, and their salt at sixty cents per bushel..."
Well, that sixty cents would make a good sum in modern currency. So, I'm just waiting on that oil rig to bring in another good producing field so we may all have a lucky, wealthy year. Health is a given, is it not?

Governor declares State of Emergency due to severe weather

By Crystal Staley/Angie Van Berkel

Frankfort, KY - Gov. Andy Beshear declared a State of Emergency today due to a powerful severe weather system generating heavy rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, hail and strong straight-line winds impacting much of Western, Eastern and South Central Kentucky.

The severe weather caused flash flooding, loss of power and damage of public infrastructure and private properties.

Heavy rain bringing totals of 2 to 5 inches is expected throughout the day in much of Kentucky, followed by a cold front tonight, which could complicate response efforts. Casey County reported a rainfall total of 5.25 inches.

Flash flooding in Green, Barren, Taylor, Adair, Owsley, Breathitt and Casey counties has resulted in numerous road closures and water rescues. High water was blocking all or parts of multiple roads in Floyd, Knott and Pike counties as of noon. Casey County and Owsley County have declared local states of emergency.

A tornado touchdown was reported in Hopkinsville, causing severe damage to downtown businesses, and a possible tornado touchdown was reported in Taylor County, where numerous households have been damaged.

Poetry by Robert Stone: Saving and spending

Saving and spending: A villanelle for the birthday of Lisa Comperry

By Robert Stone
These seven years of leanness if they end,
reminding now of past economy,
will launch a time to save as well as spend.

Avoiding stylish overspending trend
undoubtedly will give autonomy
these seven years of leanness if they end,

Abandon waste and wasteful ways emend,
such needed learning as gastronomy
will launch a time to save as well as spend.

Reject the calls abundance will extend
for wants called needs by sly metonymy
these seven years of leanness if they end.

Have nothing more to do that will depend
believing that new deuteronomy
will launch a time to save as well as spend.

Have faith that all good things you do ascend
and so with new enhanced taxonomy,
these seven years of leanness if they end
will launch a time to save as well as spend.
~ Robert Stone, 31 December 2021
