The Great Wooded South
By Billy Joe Fudge

The Great Wooded South is more
Than a sum of its many parts;
It's the firmest of foundations
Upon which we rest our hearts.

The Great Wooded South is more
Than clearings amidst many trees;
It's the end of the rainbow,
That dreamers and seers see.

The Great Wooded South is more
Than tiny waypoints on some maps;
It's community and neighbors,
Hard work and afternoon naps.

The Great Wooded South is more
Than an imagined place in time;
It's about battles fought and won,
Confident hope and peace of mind.

Yes, the Great Wooded South is more
Than a woodlot beyond our home;
It's a forest safe and secure,
Where no one need stand alone.
