Update on Vehicle Title Processing

By Lisa Greer, Adair County Clerk

The Motor Vehicle System did allow us to do some transactions today. It will continue to be slow for a while, but hopefully this is good news for us getting back to normal processing! If things change tomorrow we will update. But as of now we are up working doing most transactions, there are some processes that we still can not perform. Please feel free to call before you come into the office to see if we can perform the transaction you are needing. 270-384-2801.

We truly appreciate everyone's continued patience during this time! Thank you.

Letter: Leucocoprinus birnbaumii?

Marie Freeman writes:
Often found growing in houseplants, the Leucocoprinus birnbaumii is also found on the forest floor in warmer environments. Its edibility is unknown, but North Carolina State University includes it on a list of mushrooms to avoid.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leucocoprinus_birnbaumii

Do you have yellow mushrooms in your potted houseplant?

Other Other common names for lepiota
  • Plantpot Dapperling
  • Lemon Yellow Lepiot
  • Yellow Pleated parasol
  • Yellow Spirit Umbrella
Always a guess with fungus, but would be my guess...

LWC Men's Basketball: 2020-21 Rewind

By Kyle Jackson

The Blue Raiders featured one all-conference selection in Elijah Jordan. The junior guard collected the honor after leading the team in points per game, averaging 16.8 for the season and 17.0 in conference contests. He additionally led Lindsey Wilson with 39 total assists and 22 total steals. Jordan was proficient from the floor, boasting a conference sixth-best 0.500 field goal percentage.

Payton Cundiff scorched the hardwood from beyond the three-point arc, dropping 45 shots from the outside to not only lead the team in that category but also rank number 12 in the conference. His hottest performance of the season came at Georgetown (KY) on New Year's Eve when he shot an impressive 7-of-11 from behind the 3-point line. Cundiff was also second on the team in scoring with 10.4 points per outing, while he led the Blue Raiders from the charity stripe, shooting 82.4 percent (28-of-34).

Also contributing largely on the score sheet was Colen Gaynor, who posted 10.1 points per contest.

Letter: Barn photo brings back memories

Jennifer Fudge Carter writes:
This picture shows what used to be my Dad's barn. I have memories of stripping tobacco in this barn, pulling tobacco plants in the nearby plant bed and playing in the barn. The property was sold and divided after my Dad's passing in 2011. Dr. George Webb now owns this piece of property, but it will always be home to me. I make at least one annual trip sometimes more down to the farm to reminisce.

As we get older we look back on our childhood memories and realize how precious family time really is especially when our parents are gone. I loved growing up on our family farm. My Dad took pride in keeping the fields and road sides mowed and clean. My Mom loved her flower beds--much to Dad's disgust when he had to mow around them, but he did it anyway. Thanks for the picture and bringing back sweet memories.

New Student Orientation Days welcome the Class of 2025 to LWC

Lindsey Wilson College welcomed 158 new members of the Class of 2025 to campus last Friday and Saturday during the college's second set of new student orientation days this summer. NSO introduces freshmen to the LWC community and gives them the opportunity to meet their fellow classmates and complete important steps of the enrollment process.

"We were so excited to host NSO in person this year," said LWC Associate Director of Admissions Hannah Peck. "We loved getting the chance to connect in person with students and their families - but most importantly, we loved seeing the students get connected with one another."

Brooklyn Houk of Richmond, KY, was one of those freshmen who appreciated the opportunity to explore campus in advance and meet new people.

"Everyone was so sweet and I felt so welcomed," said Houk. "It was a great experience getting to meet everyone. I think the most beneficial part about that day was getting to know more about Lindsey Wilson and it made me feel like I was at a home away from home. It made the transition easier and less stressful."

Remembering the CHASE Concert at ACHS, 1973

By Doug Beard

I've been reviewing newspapers from 1974-1975 when I served as the editor of our high school newspaper, Smoke Signals. The CHASE concert was a major event for our area featuring one of the top jazz-rock bands in the country. I captured images from the 1974 yearbook to complete the collage. It's hard to believe this concert was forty-eight years ago.

The 1973 article about the concert reads:
Adair County High holds its first rock concert

One of the highlights of the school year was a concert by Chase, one of the leading rock groups in the country Not only did Chase perform for the entire student body, but Bill Chase, the leader of the group, held a clinic for band members to help them with their playing.

The concert, sponsored by the Adair County High School Band, lasted slightly over an hour. Over 2400 students from Adair County and surrounding counties attended. The gym at Adair County High was the scene of all the excitement and the gym was practically full.

The arrangements to get Chase was made by Bill Chinn, the band director. This was the first rock concert that has been held in Adair County and everyone was thrilled about having a top band such as Chase to perform. As well as being entertainment for the student body, this concert helped the band to raise money to purchase new uniforms.

Four memberes of the band would perish in a tragic airplane accident in 1974. Smoke Signals for Tuesday, September 24, 1974, reported:
