Governor's Monday Update

By Crystal Staley/Sebastian Kitchen

Frankfort, KY - - Gov. Andy Beshear on Monday updated Kentuckians on steps the state is taking to address the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19).

"We're going to get through this together, we are going to come out the other side, we are going to rebuild and restart our economy, we're going to take care of each other as we're going through this, and I believe we have the opportunity to be not only stronger, but better coming out of it," the Governor said. "We have seen what we are capable of when we come together, and that ought to tell us what our potential is moving forward."

Gov. Beshear and administration officials also spoke about the importance of wearing masks and aiding contact tracing efforts in preventing spikes of the virus in the commonwealth. Officials also reminded Kentuckians that today is the deadline to request an absentee ballot for the upcoming primary elections and of the need to fill out U.S. Census forms. Updates on education and corrections also were provided.

Remembering Miss Gin -- Lovie Glen Marcum Hughes

The youngest daughter and middle child of Alice Bell Royce and William David (Bill Doc) Marcum - Lovie Glen Marcum Hughes, passed away quietly at her home in Louisville in July 2009 - just after her 95th birthday.

She was raised in Sulphur Well with her older sister, Lois, and their younger brother, Earl Reid, in the lean Depression era.

Not long before her death, she revisited the memory of her mother making their shoes on a cobbler's leather awl and sewing their clothes from sack cloth. She remembered her dad paying her to feed the fox hounds he raised and sold. That may have been her first business experience which would start her on a lifetime of management.

Letter: also got one of those letters with parcel #

Vicky Pike writes:
I, too, got one of those letters with the parcel number on it. Mine didn't have an offer but I messaged back if they were interested there was 20 or so acres on the other side of the Cumberland parkway from me listed at $2.7 million. Got a nice thank you and they would check it out.

I reckon they think we landowners don't have a brain in our head. Well my momma didn't raise no fool. Better than them have tried for the last 50 years and a BROWNING's name is still on the deed and paying the taxes.

Thanks for sharing so nobody else will think it's a legit offer. Call or email them and let them know what is what. People will be moving to the country in droves after the year we have had. As you say, we have reputable real estate folks here that can handle things. End of rant from the Pampered Angus Ranch. -Miss Vicky, spread boss.

Letter: A note of gratitude

On Friday, June 12, 2020, Adair County 911 received a call about from a scared parent about a missing 8-year-old. Summer sends a heartfelt thanks to the dispatchers, first responders and the community for coming together to offer support and help quickly locate him.

By Summer

I want to thank EVERY SINGLE PERSON who came out to help find my son. I can never express in words how truly thankful I am that during the scariest time in my life I had so many beautiful people helping to find him. Praise the Lord for every one of you!!!

I called and searched for my son and his dogs in all the usual places he likes to play and when my wonderful neighbors heard my repeated distressed calls they immediately joined me to help look for him. We all looked everywhere we could think of, even on neighboring property, before I called 911.

Thank you to all my wonderful neighbors who helped me look for him!!

I was such a wreck when I called 911 that I could hardly speak at times. Thankfully, there was a sweet soul on the other end of the phone who remained calm and reassuring and she helped me to calm down a bit so I could describe my boy. She took the information and within minutes of hanging up, a couple of sheriffs and then the first responders arrived to help.

Thank you so much to the sweet lady who took my 911 call.

It was unbelievable how fast everyone arrived. They asked me a few questions, formed a plan and immediately carried it out.

KSP announces virtual alternative to Trooper Island

By Tpr. Jonathan /Sgt. Josh Lawson

Frankfort, KY - It was supposed to be a celebration as Kentucky State Police (KSP) planned to host the fifty-fifth year of their Trooper Island Kid's Camp. Then the COVID-19 pandemic struck and out of concern for safety, KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer made the tough decision to cancel camp - but with a twist. He challenged his Trooper Island Camp Staff to develop a free virtual camp that kids can attend by watching online via an electronic device or television.

"Trooper Island Camp, located on an island in Dale Hollow Lake, provides a camping experience for nearly 800 underprivileged children each year," says Brewer. "I couldn't fathom not sharing this experience with Kentucky children and ending 55 years of tradition by not hosting it."

Brewer decided that if the kids couldn't come to camp, he would bring camp to them.

"We have the technology and resources to bring a piece of the island to the kids - even if it is virtually," adds Brewer. "While we may not be able to interact in person, we can still connect with these young people and teach them skills they can utilize at home or when camp is back in session."

History Monday: What Might You Find? And Where?

By Mike Watson

Recently this was posted in an on-line group: "Research material can turn up anywhere--in a dusty old letter in an archive, a journal, or some old photographs you found in a charity shop."--Sara Sheridan.

No statement could be more true. We who seek to find and preserve history search everywhere, even in unlikely places. Things find those who seek, I believe. And information may be derived from unlikely sources.

The following item was found in a North Carolina newspaper from 1827. It concerns a kidnapping, forced servitude, revolution, love, old age and death. From England to America to Kentucky. This is only indirectly connected to Adair County, but is fully grounded in Green County.
