Mrs. Novella D. Montgomery Sparks, 74, Adair Co., KY native (1942-2017)

She was the daughter of the late Rolliin Hurt Montgomery & Marie Dile Montgomery and the widow of Motford Maylon Sparks. She leaves 16 direct living descendants. She was a member of Bunker Hill Christian Church, Bunker Hill, IN. She was a homemaker, farmer and a factory laborer. She enjoyed gardening, canning, fishing, and traveling. She loved music, singing, yodeling and playing harmonica. She was involved in all of her kids and grandkids activities.

Lindsey Wilson's Kapres is MSC Men's Bowler of the Week

COLUMBIA, KY (Tue 24 Jan 2017) - Eli Kapres is the Mid-South Conference Men's Bowler of the Week, conference officials announced on Tuesday. The junior from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania recorded a pair of top-20 finishes over the weekend while averaging a score of 177.6 over 10 games.

Homeplace fund raiser nearer goal: $980 needed with week to go

Adair County HS Beta Club shines at state convention

Quiz Bowl team finishes in top eight against elite competition

Eleven members of the Adair County High School Beta Club were in Lexington Sunday and Monday for competitions at the annual state convention. The quiz bowl team, competing against more than 50 other clubs from across the state, managed an impressive, top-eight finish.

"I was very proud of them," says ACHS science teacher Sheila Willis, who serves as the club's co-sponsor, along with Dawn Baker. "Their behavior was exemplary, their effort in the competitions was stellar, and they really represented our school and our community very well."

In addition to the strong finish in Quiz Bowl, Jaiden Taylor finished third in the science written assessment competition.

Planting bulbs with Auggie and Gracie on McKinley Lane

Mitzi McKinley Bault journals about life and times on McKinley Lane in Columbia, KY. Today's news is about her work planting spring bulbs with the help of her dogs Auggie and Gracie.

She wrote, "I have some spring bulbs that should have already been put out. The wind comes from the backside of our house. So I got my mud boots, bulbs and spade and went to the front. For some reason Auggie barks at a broom, weed eater, etc.

KY Treasurer promotes Oleka, hires Heavrin

Frankfort, KY - Kentucky State Treasurer Allison Ball announced today that she has promoted her current Communications Director, OJ Oleka, to serve as Chief of Staff and Assistant State Treasurer.

Treasurer Ball has also hired Samara Heavrin to serve as the Unclaimed Property Division Director. In addition to that role, Heavrin will assist in promoting Treasurer Ball's new STABLE Kentucky initiative and other legislative priorities.

Frankfort, KY - Organizers of the Kentucky Century Challenge are pleased to announce that registration is now open for the 5th Annual Kentucky Century Challenge and the newly established Kentucky Cycling Challenge.

The Challenges feature five of the most popular touring rides in Kentucky, and are generously supported by new Platinum Sponsor Ale-8-One and Gold Sponsors Graviss McDonald's and Morehead Tourism.

Registration is free and open to all cyclists on the Kentucky Adventure Tourism website through April 15 (Note that separate registration for the individual rides is also required, and the rides do charge a fee for registration).

LWC's Tessari collects 4th MSC Wrestler of Week honor

COLUMBIA, KY (Mon 23 Jan 2017) - For the fourth time this season, Cam Tessari is the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday. The junior from Monroeville, Ohio compiled a 6-0 week en route to the weekly conference honor.

Tessari opened the week with a 16-1 technical fall against Bobby Ehman of Cumberlands (KY) in the Blue Raiders' 20-18 win over the Patriots.

He then followed with a 5-0 performance at the Missouri Valley College Invitational on his way to the title at the 157-pound bracket. Tessari pinned his first three opponents at the tournament to reach the semifinals. In the semis, he defeated No. 7-ranked Giovanny Bonilla of Southeastern (Fla.) before topping fifth-ranked Brandon Weber of Montana State-Northern in the championship bout to improve to 26-2 on the year.
