Says her family has nothing but praise for WRH

Marsha Walker writes:
My family has nothing but praise for WRH. We have always gone there for our medical care and received only the best from the doctors, nurses, aides and other support staff. My husband's life was probably saved at WRH on one occasion. My mother has received the very best of care there many times.

We commend the staff members of WRH for their recent letter and agree that we must do all that we can to keep this facility. Thanks to Doug Beard for his concern and very sensible comments. --Marsha Walker

Commends Wendy Gousha for simplifying complex issues

Jon Halsey writes:
Thank you Ms. Gousha. Along with the late, great Milton Friedman (whose birth anniversary is today) you have a gift of explaining the complex in eloquently simple, easy to understand terms.

I am encouraged by your post that there may be enough others in the community capable of divorcing emotional decision making and ad hominem arguments to force some pull back and begin some fact based rational analysis of how to best provide for this community's long term basic medical needs.

Says we have proven we can't run a hospital; time to sell

Brandy Smith-Thompson RN writes:
In regards to Mr. Halsey we all understand that everyone wants the hospital to stay open yet no one wants to put forth a effort to do what needs to be done to get this accomplished. If the 3.7 tax does not take place because of these petitions do you not realize that the banks can and will enforce a tax at a much higher rate? I am not sure how you do math, but 3.7 is a lot less that the 10 to 20 that the banks will implement. I admit no one likes a tax, and most feel that it is horribly wrong. The point is we owe the debt. No matter how the debt accumulated we still have to get it paid. We need to stop the blame game and fix the problem period. Selling to a bigger corporation is what has to happen. We have already proven that we do not have what it takes to maintain and run it as a county owned business. Sometimes it is hard to let go of our pride, but the bigger man can admit when he can't handle something or when it fails. - Brandy Smith-Thompson RN

The petition is to give the voters chance to vote on hospital tax

Wendy Gousha writes:
We should all be very thankful for the staff at Westlake for the job they do everyday and for the hospital. No one in this community wants the hospital to close nor have anyone lose their jobs.

However, the petition is not to stop the hospital tax, it is simply to get it on the ballot so that this community has a right to vote one way or another.

Yes, we know how hard it is to find good jobs in this area and in an already stressed economy having another tax increase could mean a family losing their home or vehicle, and worse maybe having to get a second or third job just to have ends meet and not being able to spend time with their families.

We, as Americans have a right to voice our opinions and to be heard. Voting is a way to be heard. Whether you are against the tax or for it, signing the petition will NOT stop the hospital tax. By signing the petition you are saying that you want the issue on the ballot to be voted on thru a democratic process. Sincerely, - Wendy Gousha

Wants elected officials to save hospital

Let's not take the easy way out on this issue writer says.

Mike Newton writes:
Well written commentary by Doug Beard! I also agree with the comments submitted by the WRH staff . . . it strongly indicates how much they care.

The answers are not going to be easy, nor, impossible. I hope our elected officials fight hard to save this facility, and not allow someone else to take it over, only to close it down.

Let's not take the easy way out on this issue. Adair County must have a sound school system and hospital in order to ever have a hope at competing for future industrial location here in Adair County. - Mike Newton

Being for the hospital vs. position on tax 2 separate issues

Everybody is for the hospital, writer says. But being for the tax or against it, for the purposes it is to be used for, is an entirely separate issue, Jon Halsey says
" . . . to set up a false position and then argue against it is a well honed trick of too many of our politicians today, especially those who seem to think that the voting public is ignorant and will react emotionally instead of logically." - JON HALSEY

By Jon Halsey
Personal commentary

The staff at Westlake make an excellent point but one which all of us who have posted previously agree with. I haven't read any letter that proposes or even remotely suggests that the hospital is not needed.

However, to set up a false position and then argue against it is a well honed trick of too many of our politicians today, especially those who seem to think that the voting public is ignorant and will react emotionally instead of logically.

Westlake Regional Hospital Employees write

To the citizens of Adair County:

How many of you reading this right now has ever had a medical crisis involving you or someone you love? I would be willing to wager that the vast majority of you have at least known someone who has needed immediate medical attention. We also will never know when this might occur to us in the future. Therefore, this letter pertains to each and every person living in this county. As you all know, our hospital is having extreme financial problems. And as I'm sure many of you know, it has been proposed to reinstate the hospital tax to the people of Adair County. I realize that many people are opposed to a tax. However, I would like for you to take a few minutes of your time to consider exactly what we're dealing with.

Money continues to come in to Mary's House, and we are very hopeful now that the goal can be reached by August 1, 2012. Wouldn't that be encouraging to everybody to meet this goal even in face of these times?

With a strong finish, we can raise the final $12,940 which must be banked before construction begins on this home for this wonderful family.

If you haven't participated yet, why not today? If you've already given, maybe you'd like to make a second donation (some already have) to make sure we reach the goal by August 1, 2012.

Here's how you can help - please don't wait! -

Mary's House: the story and the contacts:
Cane Valley Christian Church, along with a group of concerned citizens, is raising money to build a new house for Mary McGuffin, a single, working mother with seven children, whose house recently burned. All donations will be escrowed until 100% of the funds are raised. Land and labor have already been donated. Checks are to be made to Cane Valley Christian Church Benevolence Fund with a memo of "Mary's House." Please make all donations by August 1 so that construction can begin. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of the people listed below:
- Jim Flowers - 270-634-1696; Melissa Fudge - 270-634-3603; Don Neat - 270-250-1512; Larry Neat - 270-789-7830; Debbie White - 270-384-5481
We invite you to join us in this endeavor to provide Mary and her children with a new home. Many people are "on board" and very eager to help God bless Mary through this building project. God uses people, and He wants to bless others through you. As you respond to His prompting, you will be blessed! You may send your donations to either of the following:
- MELISSA FUDGE, 480 Fire Department Lane, Breeding, KY 42715
- DEBBIE WHITE, 501 Beechtop Road, Columbia, KY 42728
