Stephanie Caldwell: A modest proposal for skateboard park

We don't have to have something that is the best of the best all the time. Sometimes it is wiser to get something to do for now until we can do better. - Stephanie Caldwell

By Stephanie Caldwell
Guest commentary

A few years back there was some talk of a skateboarding park, but from my understanding the funds were an issue.

While I understand that funds are a problem for many things that the members of the community would like to see, I don't understand why something as simple as a half pipe and a bit more concrete in one of the existing parks couldn't be a good compromise.

I know there were concerns for insurance as well, but does the city not already have insurance for the pool, and other outdoor play equipment at the city park?

We don't have to have something that is the best of the best all the time. Sometimes it is wiser to get something to do for now until we can do better. --Stephanie Caldwell

Parents, City need to act to stop unsafe skateboarding

Rebecca Grant writes:
Earlier today I was in Columbia and saw two young men on skateboards. I am not against skateboards but these two should choose some place better than the street in front of McDonald's and Pizza Hut. While they did get out of the street when they saw/heard my vehicle, it scared me because someone else could not have been watching. Please Columbia, find a place, fix a place for the kids to ride the skateboards in safety situations. And in the meantime, parents talk to your children regarding safety issues. -Rebecca Grant

100 Years Ago: An incident of war in Columbia, KY

Here's a sure to be nominee for the Best Story Ever on ColumbiaMagazine.com. It's a fascinating tale of Early Days when there were still killings in Adair County. (It seems so long this day since there's been one). Reader opinions are invited using the new Likeable buttons on CM, or better yet, long, short, and in between critiques. Readers are also welcome to tell movie makers about the story, to help the Columbia/Adair Co. Film Board further raise the international fame of the local industry and its impact on our economy. -EW

Transcribed from the November 18, 1908 News. Almost certainly, the author was John Edward "J.E." Murrell, long time employee of the newspaper.
An Incident of War

The Killing of Capt. John R. Curry by W. S. Long, in this place, September, 1864.

A Display of Genuine Courage
In September, 1864, the population of Columbia was not more than one-third as large as it is at this time, and notwithstanding the war of the rebellion had not closed, the inhabitants were quiet, law abiding citizens.

A Concession of Charles Marshburn: Billy Joe Fudge was right

Now a "Rough Green Snake" man. But augments research on his Coachwhip serpent.
Comments re article 45732 Jon Halsey Siding with BJ Fudge on snake IDCharles Marshburn writes:
Appears I have been outflanked by the forrester on this issue. I would like to add that the coachwhip is found throughout the southern region of our country and takes on a variety of colors.

The fact causing me to concede is the color Wendy's snake took on in death. Curses, foiled again! - Charles Marshburn
Amen! This took courage to admit. We know. It was the right thing to do. Confession is good for the soul. And for everyone else, we have an open invitation to all to do likewise. In the words of the Old Evangelist, "Tell it all brother, the truth will set you free." Or, at least, almost all, for those who know the rest of that story. -CM.
