Elberta, AL pastor built skateboard ramps, youthful congregation Comments re article 45747. Stephanie Caldwell: A modest proposal for skateboard park Commentary by "Melewi" I went to a church in Elberta, AL, and there, the preacher built three different sizes of skateboard ramps from wood. Every Tuesday students would ride the school bus to the church after school and the pastor would be there to greet them, let them skateboard for a while, and then take them to the church cafe' and feed them, teach them something from the Bible, then let them skateboard until their parents came and picked them up. When I went back to visit the church there were more teenagers than adults at the church and they were turned on to God. The ramps were not beautiful, but the kids loved having a place to ride. Skateboarding is fun if you learn how to ride. I tried riding my brother's and I did fine on the carpet, but when I hit bare floor the board went one way and I went the other. Memories pressed between the pages of my mind. --MelewiThe writer, Maury E. Lewis, occasionally uses the pen name "Melewi." This story was posted on 2011-07-22 17:58:53
