Time to get the furnace inspected

It's time to have the furnace inspected. Safety is the most important reason. A professional inspection can detect issues like gas leaks, carbon monoxide buildup, or faulty wiring, preventing potential fire hazards or poisoning risks. Carbon monoxide, a silent killer, causes over 400 deaths annually in the U.S., per CDC data.

Regular maintenance, including cleaning filters and checking ducts, ensures your furnace runs efficiently, reducing energy waste.

Safe Halloween draws more than 1,100 area residents

By Duane Bonifer

Lindsey Wilson University student Peyton Allen '27 didn't have much free time during the last month.

That's because the human services and counseling major from Louisville, Kentucky, dedicated most of her free time decorating her corner of Phillips Hall for the university's annual "Safe Halloween."

On Friday, October 31, 2025, 1,120 area children and family members made their way through four Lindsey Wilson residence halls during the university's 31st "Safe Halloween," according to Lindsey Wilson Director of Student Activities Stephanie Blackwood.

The costumed guests -- which often included children and family members -- filled their bags with candy while encountering beloved, feared and loathed characters from the stage and screen.

Allen's area of Phillips Hall was decorated in the theme of the 2012 Disney animated comedy Wreck-It Ralph. Allen dressed as the film's character Vanellope von Schweetz.

To prepare the hallway for trick-or-treaters, Allen and fellow residents started work in late September, spending as many as 20 hours a week on their hallway's design. Allen said the work was worth it when she handed out candy to children during Friday night's "Safe Halloween."

Silent City 2025: Marshall Paull Todd

Mary Marshall Paull Todd was a fifth grade teacher. She was a feminist who called herself a defender of her family heritage, her Cumberland Union Presbyterian Church on Burkesville Street, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Democrat party.

Late in her life, we asked Marshall what she might advise today's young women from her experience? She was troubled that, while women were able to vote and own land, still they weren't safe from physical abuse in their own homes and had not moved near equal pay for equal work.

After a few moments thought, Marshall said, "I'd advise young women to get the education that would train them to have a good job, to be able to stand on their own feet and have healthy self esteem, and I'd advise them to take self-defense classes."
