Road improvements coming in Taylor and Green By Larry Joe Smith, 99.9 The Big Dawg Brad Bottoms with the Kentucky Department of Highways gave details of two new roundabouts at the April Taylor County Fiscal Court meeting. The Campbellsville to Greensburg project starts at West Main, signal number one, and goes to the signal near Greensburg's McDonald's. That project includes what we call 2+1, what we've seen going to Lebanon and to Columbia in the last few years, alternating passing lanes and some turn lanes, with those two roundabouts at each end. He said they anticipate the roundabout in Greensburg will be completed before the end of the calendar year. The rest of the project will likely be in 2026. 2025-04-25 22:05:57 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Local Government

Adair Co. Schools awarded $70K Numeracy Counts grant From Holly Trowbridge Adair County Board of Education Adair County Schools is proud to share that it has been selected as one of forty school districts in Kentucky to receive a $70,000 grant from the Kentucky Department of Education. The Numeracy Counts grant will fund the acquisition of high-quality, research and evidence-based math curriculum aligned with academic standards for kindergarten through third grade. Additionally, it will support professional learning opportunities that equip teachers to effectively implement the new curriculum in their classrooms. Lisa Hayes, the Instructional Coach at the Adair County Primary Center, shared, "The Kentucky Numeracy Counts grant will continue to encourage a school-wide focus on math, helping to foster a shared commitment to numeracy and math fluency. Teachers will receive ongoing, targeted training in math instruction, which can boost their confidence and effectiveness in the classroom. It will also fund time for teachers to analyze student data, collaborate on strategies, and reflect on instruction. With more effective instruction and focused interventions, students build better number sense and critical thinking skills. Students will benefit from more interactive, differentiated, and culturally responsive math instruction, leading to greater engagement and self-belief." The district Supervisor of Elementary Instruction, Susan Pfefferman, added, "We are so excited to receive the Numeracy Counts grant as it will provide the resources teachers need to increase engagement and rigor in mathematics instruction for our students." 2025-04-25 11:51:36 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Education

Kentucky health officials report 2nd measles case From Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services Frankfort, KY - On April 24, 2025, Kentucky health officials announced that a second confirmed measles case has been reported in the commonwealth in 2025. The second case occurred in March in a child who was traveling through the commonwealth when they sought treatment. The child, who is not a resident of the United States, was diagnosed at a health care facility in Kentucky, which is why the case will be counted as a Kentucky incident. The health care facility adhered to strict safety protocols, eliminating the risk of spread to other patients. There are no other cases and no risks of exposure to Kentuckians associated with this case. This Kentucky associated measles case comes amidst health officials' reporting declining immunization rates among Kentucky's kindergartners. Results from the most recent assessment of kindergarten vaccines for the 2024-2025 school year were released today, which show that immunization coverage has dropped to the lowest rates in over seven years for Kentucky kindergarteners. Coverage among kindergartners for the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which is effective at preventing diseases, including measles, and is legally required for school attendance in Kentucky, has dropped to 86.9%, which is lower than the national average of 93%. By comparison, MMR rates for Kentucky kindergartners were at 90.0% for the 2023-2024 school year. Connor Loy signs with Jacksonville State University By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer Adair County High School Basketball Senior Connor Loy has committed to Jacksonville State University to continue his athletic and academic career. Loy has over 3,000 career points and is by far the leading scorer in Adair County history. Over his varsity career, he has amassed 128 wins, 2 all state selections, was selected as the 2025 5th region player of the year and KY Mr. Basketball finalist, and was of course a twice region champion. The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State play at the NCAA Division 1 level in Conference USA. Other members of the conference include Western Kentucky University and Middle Tennessee State University. Connor will join a roster that featured one player from Kentucky last season, Quel'Ron House, a 2024 graduate of Seneca Academy in Louisville. House, a 2024 first team all state selection at Seneca, has left the Gamecocks and entered the transfer portal. Jacksonville State finished last season with a record of 23-13 and they made it to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament (NIT), so Loy will join a program already prepared for success. I hope everyone in the community will join us at Columbia Magazine in congratulating Connor Loy for his signing and in thanking him for his years of talented play at Adair County. 2025-04-25 08:02:05 | Comments | Printable version | See topic Sports
