Avoid unnecessary travel during winter events

From Amber Hale

Somerset, KY - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) District 8 is preparing for another round of winter weather set to impact the region tonight. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a winter storm warning is in effect for District 8, with snowfall projections ranging from 3 to 6 inches beginning tonight and continuing into Wednesday, February 19, 2025. Hazardous travel conditions are expected, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during the storm to ensure their safety and allow road crews to perform their duties efficiently.

For anyone who must drive, the following measures are recommended to help keep motorists safe and prepared:
  • Put yourself in emergency mode
  • Pay attention to weather advisories. Weather will impact your commute on some level
  • Travel only as necessary during major snow events. It's better to be stuck at home than to be stuck on the road
  • Maintain a safe distance from snowplows and other heavy highway equipment
  • Do not pass snowplows on the shoulder
  • Allow time for a slower commute
  • Winterize vehicles
  • Supply vehicles with blankets, flash light and an emergency supply kit
  • Know before you go. Visit goky.ky.gov and download the free Waze app to check traffic conditions before you travel. You can also get traffic information for the District 8 counties at www.facebook.com/KYTCDistrict8 or by following us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/KYTCDistrict8.
  • Eliminate distractions (e.g. operating phone and eating) while driving
  • Cooperate with the expectations of the Quick Clearance law, which requires drivers to move vehicles to the shoulder in the event of a non-injury crash

CU Chapel encouragement - leave a worthwhile legacy

By Simon Baker, student news writer,
Office of University Communications

Campbellsville, KY -.- "I want you to eavesdrop over my shoulder and listen to my conversation with God as He and I were talking about my legacy," Dr. Joe Owens shared as he spoke at Campbellsville University's chapel on Jan. 29.

Owens has served as a member of the CU Board of Trustees since 2004. He's also served as chair of the Board of Trustees. He began his message with an invitation for students to listen to a back-and-forth conversation between God and him, where God reminded Owens of all the people God has placed in his life who have been a "legacy bridge builder," shaping who Owens is today.

Kentucky Color: Best Covey Dog

By Billy Joe Fudge

During the early 1960s, Mickey was named The Great Wooded South's Best Covey Dog! Even though he has been gone over fifty years, he still holds the title.

Mickey was the son of Smokey. Smokey held the title of The Great Wooded South's Bird Dog Legend! Bird Dog Legend carries the subtitle of "Best All Around Bird Dog" and that is a story for a different day.

Mickey, like his Dad, was a Lemon Spotted Pointer. That should not be confused with Yellow Spotted Pointers. Lemons have flesh-colored noses and lighter colored, more rounded eyes, while Yellows have brown noses and eyes. There is also a Black Spotted Pointer as well as a Liver (dark brown) Spotted Pointer.

Mickey, like his father, was a winder as opposed to a trailer. A winder holds their head high to sniff smells in the air while trailers primarily sniff the ground to follow a scent trail to find birds. Winders are much faster hunters, and will often circle an area they are about to hunt to get downwind so the smells in the air will come toward their genetically superior noses, rather than away. The better the sense of smell and the better at positioning, the faster a dog will find the birds.

Dad's nephew, Keith Jessie, hunted a lot around the Midwest back in the day. He hunted many times with a breeder who raised, hunted, and competed in field trials with his dogs. The breeder was very competitive and successful. Keith told him that his Uncle Dell had a dog that would put his best dogs to shame. The breeder told Keith that if that turned out to be true, he would own the dog!

The breeder and Keith arrived one frosty November morning for one of The Great Wooded South's greatest competitive hunts.
