Basketball: Indians defeat Royals, 90-54

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

On Friday, December 27, 2024, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team defeated the Mason County Royals 90-54 in first round play in the Mason County Invitational Tournament.

The Indians led by 7 at the half, but were able to expand the lead throughout the second half, running up to the 36 point final margin. The Indians were led in scoring by Connor Loy, who set a career high with 42 points while shooting 17-22 from the floor and 2-3 from distance. Loy repeatedly carved up the Royals defense, driving to the basket repeatedly for a lay up.

The Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team returns to tournament action at 12:30pmET on Saturday, December 28, 2024, to face a tough Campbell County Camels basketball team in round 2 of the Mason County Invitational Tournament at the Mason County Fieldhouse, 1320 U.S. Hwy 68, Maysville, KY.

The Camels arrive at this game after a 77-58 win over WEB DuBois. They previously defeated Newport 56-52, who the Indians lost to earlier this season. The Camels are led by hot-shot Freshman Austin Davie, who led them in scoring in a recent win against Johnson Central and has scored in double figures in every one of their games this season. The Camels like high scoring games. They are 6-0 when they score at least 75 points, and 3-2 when they don't. The Indians may look to slow the game down and make Campbell County spend a lot of time on defense.

KSP: Illegal chicken fighting investigations update

Frankfort, KY - (Dec 27, 2024) - Following a years-long investigation across the commonwealth in collaboration with local and federal law enforcement, the Kentucky State Police (KSP) arrested multiple individuals in connection to illegal chicken fighting. The arrests led to seven federal indictments and plea agreements, which were reached in early December.

The effort was led by Detective Zachary Bryson, who is assigned to KSP's Drug Enforcement Special Investigations (DESI) unit and serves as a task force officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Detective Bryson's collaboration with the FBI, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Attorney's Office culminated in the arrests of multiple individuals involved in illegal chicken fighting operations across eastern Kentucky.

Phillip Coffey: Facts of Life

By Phillip Wood Coffey

'Somebody, kick the checkerboard over' - running through my young mind.
I dare not take another loss in Keltner General Store today - wait just a moment.

Wrong move made by my opponent, give him one - then take three more
Move the conquered bounty captives, gently over to my side of the board.

Most innocent of times, ageless tales shared to everyone-all enjoying the Peaceful, life ride.
Stoke the fire up, stay a while - not even near any harvest of any crop-time

Not ever wasted among the country folk, consoling the 'foolish one' after swapping knives - unseen.
Pains of spats among the bright, simple people - 'now just move right along.'

Some may need to be fishing - but seldom on the ridges - headwater of many branches.
No blue holes ever found there, maybe frog gigging on banks of a farmer's pond.

'Hear tale, some are ailing - come along my son, show you the facts of life - help each other, one person at a time.'
