Whistle Sullivan, 83, Green County, KY (1941-2024) Wendell DeLynn "Whistle" Sullivan of Greensburg, Kentucky, son of the late Brady B. Sullivan and Blanche Bagby Sullivan Crain, was born Saturday, January 25, 1941 in Green County and departed this life on Monday, September 23, 2024 at Baptist Health Hardin. He was 83 years, 7 months and 29 days of age. He had made a profession of faith in Christ and was a member of the Fry Baptist Church. He was a member of the Greensburg Masonic Lodge #54 F&AM. He was also a veteran having served in the United States Army and Army National Guard, and worked for GE as a Line Worker and Fork Lift Driver. KSP update on officer-involved shooting in Russell Co. From Sherry Bray Russell Springs, KY - The Kentucky State Police (KSP) Critical Incident Response Team continues to investigate an officer-involved shooting that occurred on September 16, 2024 at approximately 5:27 p.m. CDT in Russell County. Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that Trooper Jake Smith from Post 15, Columbia, attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the Russell Springs community. Initially, the subject vehicle came to a stop, but during the interaction, the subject vehicle accelerated away from the stop resulting in a vehicle pursuit. Trooper Smith pursued the vehicle for a short distance until the vehicle stopped behind a residence on Bluebird Drive. The operator of the vehicle, later identified as Joshua George Arnold, a 41-year-old male, immediately exited the vehicle and fired a handgun multiple times in the direction of Trooper Smith. T.J. Health Columbia Health Fair and Lab Draws From Stacey Biggs The Community Health Fair will take place from 7amCT to 10amCT on Saturday, October 26, 2024, at T.J. Health Columbia, 901 Westlake Dr, Columbia, KY. The testing includes total cholesterol and triglycerides, biometrics exams and PSA for men. Flu shots, Shingles, COVID-19 and Pneumonia vaccines will be available in a limited quantity. Carotid and Aorta vascular screenings are also available for $50 each. T.J. Health Columbia will be having lab dates on October 2, 17, and 18, 2024, from 6amCT to 9amCT each day. Pre-registration must be completed to attend the lab draws, and you must attend on that date and time. No walk-ins will be accepted. For accurate results, do not eat or drink the morning of the test. Level 1 Drought declared in all Kentucky counties Update: State Drought Declaration removed From John Mura Frankfort, KY - The Office of the State Climatologist and the Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet, in coordination with the Kentucky Drought Mitigation Team, are issuing a Level 1 Drought Declaration for the Commonwealth of Kentucky. A Level 1 Drought indicates moderate to severe drought conditions have developed, primarily affecting soil moisture and vegetative health. Serious impacts to agricultural water needs, wildfire risk and other water-sensitive sectors can be expected in the designated areas, with the hardest-hit areas being portions of Western and Central Kentucky, as well as parts of the Bluegrass region. The Commonwealth of Kentucky is experiencing widespread dryness that has intensified over the latter part of the summer. Precipitation that has fallen over the past two months has been spotty and has resulted in drought conditions that primarily affect soil moisture and vegetative health. In some areas the drought has impacted agricultural water needs and increased the risk of wildfires. "Over the past 30 days, data from the UK Ag Weather Center shows that the state has only averaged 1.69 inches of rain, which is over 1.5 inches below normal," said Matthew Dixon, senior meteorologist with the University of Kentucky Agricultural Weather Center.
