Comment: Residents paying high cost for low taxes

"Just think of it this way: The Adair County Fiscal Court has defunded the police." -- WB

By Wendy Butler Burt

Generally I resist the temptation to post anything political, although I do wear my political orientation on my sleeve. But, today, something happened here in Adair County that perfectly illustrates the VERY high cost of extremely low taxes: our outstanding county sheriff (a Republican) finally is resigning because our fiscal court -- our equivalent of a county council or whatever else it is called elsewhere in the US -- again refused to pay our deputies a living wage (they are paid LESS than $20/hr which is -- $6 less per hour than deputies in surrounding counties).

So many have resigned that law enforcement for the ENTIRE COUNTY now consists of only 4 deputies plus the sheriff -- who typically puts in at least 100 hours/week. All of this because our fiscal court absolutely refuses to increase our absurdly low property taxes and, hence, pay county employees a living wage.

Letter: Stand for your family and county

By Mary Bardin

How are you going to like it when you are in need of police protection and no one responds? Well, this is exactly what our county is dealing with.

I attend Fiscal Court meetings on a regular basis (work is the only thing that keeps me from going). At most every meeting, our County Sheriff has requested more money to pay deputies, to retain the deputies that are trained. however, each time the magistrates turn down his request. I know that Josh Brockman has worked hundreds of overtime hours to assure Adair County is safe. Sometimes he only had one deputy on at night. I know Josh has put the county before his own family because he did not know what else to do.
