Letter: Stand for your family and county By Mary Bardin How are you going to like it when you are in need of police protection and no one responds? Well, this is exactly what our county is dealing with. I attend Fiscal Court meetings on a regular basis (work is the only thing that keeps me from going). At most every meeting, our County Sheriff has requested more money to pay deputies, to retain the deputies that are trained. however, each time the magistrates turn down his request. I know that Josh Brockman has worked hundreds of overtime hours to assure Adair County is safe. Sometimes he only had one deputy on at night. I know Josh has put the county before his own family because he did not know what else to do. I remember one meeting when our Sheriff asked for money to purchase new computers that would have been a total of $4,000.00. The magistrates said the county cannot afford to purchase new computers, and asked if the department had taken the computers to a local person for repair. It wasn't that the computers wore broken, but were so outdated they could not communicate with others in the law enforcement world. I don't know if they ever received new computers or not, but I know the magistrates fought. What a shame that our county can't afford $4000.00 to update ugh needed communication devices to keep us safe. I remember meetings when the County Judge Executive was trying to bring in more industry, and had perspective industries willing to come to Adair County with the stipulation of a cemetery of the 1800's being moved. There were hours spent researching, contacting family members of the deceased and planning for a much improved place for their loved ones to be moved. Ray Hutchison and Richard Phelps gave a presentation explaining the legalities and the many processes they had done to make sure the families were satisfied and loved ones were respectively cared for. Again our magistrates turned this down. One magistrate said he just could not vote for this because of his own feelings of this old, unkept cemetery being a final resting place! I could not believe my ears heard that come from the mouth of a man supposedly with the intelligence to represent our county. If cemeteries were not moved, Adair County would not have a parkway, Walmart or a lake!!! My goodness. Yet the personal opinions of our magistrates was priority over our county. I see lots of Adair County growth being shot down by the magistrates being vindictive. Not supporting our local law enforcement, our jail and other necessary county agencies is absurd. I am begging the Adair County citizens to take a minute to imagine calling for law protection for someone holding you at gun point, and no one shows up. I am begging you, as citizens to realize how important our Sheriff's Department is and show your support by calling your magistrate and attending Fiscal Court meetings. The decisions of the magistrates impacts each of us whether we are considered city or county. We are all a part of Adair County. Take a stand for your family and county.
