Letter: Yield signs may be downed on a dare

Ralph Waggener writes:
By the direction the Yield sign is down on the Square from the photo on Columbia Magazine it is more than likely caused by youngsters in big pickup trucks! I don't like security cameras spying on us but in this case security cameras would find out who is doing this, and if we know who, then it will stop!

I know these things because I, too, was once upon a time a kid driving! Peer pressure is so strong when you are young, sweeping the square was pushed by most everyone, in like, "have you ever done it? or, I bet you can't" that carries a lot of weight when you're young! We did not destroy things much but we as kids did our share of "I bet you can't!"

Conversation with Haiku writer Robert Stone

By Linda Waggener

If you enjoy the poems by Robert Stone in the Columbia Magazine archives, as I do, you may be missing his daily Haiku updates since his health challenges began.

Before he took a break for healing a few months back, Robert responded to my email question about his bio - I always want to know the writers behind their words, the photographers behind their pictures. What follows is our conversation on the subject:

Robert Stone wrote, "I have not written a bio. I thought about writing a long obituary for ColumbiaMagazine that could be on file when the time comes.

Tommy Druen: The meaning of true knowledge

Previous Column: Being a builder

By Tommy Druen

Recently, I came across a critique of children's television programming, lamenting that much of it is geared exclusively towards children. This struck me as odd - shouldn't children's shows primarily serve children? However, as I read further, the argument began to make sense. The theory proposed that parents and children used to watch television together more frequently, not merely because there were fewer channels, but because many shows operated on multiple levels that both could enjoy.

Consider classic cartoons like Looney Tunes or Popeye. These shows often contained hidden jokes that were perhaps even funnier to the adults watching. A prime example is Bugs Bunny winning a radio quiz with an ostensibly impossible math question. When asked how he solved it, Bugs quips, "It's easy. If there's one thing us rabbits can do, it's multiply!," followed by a suggestive snicker.

As I've grown older and, hopefully, wiser, I've realized that many of my earliest educators employed a similar dual-level approach. Lessons that seemed straightforward at the time often carried deeper meanings that resonated with me years later. One vivid memory is from Ms. Donnie Mae Thompson's first-grade class, where she had us play the game of telephone.
