On Phil Hanna

See also: Charles Philip Hanna, 72, Columbia, KY (1951-2024)

From Mike Watson with Ernestine Bennett, Annita Dial

A bright light was extinguished with the passing of our friend and colleague, Phil Hanna. Much can be said of Phil and his varied interests, multiple skills and talents, and his love of people and life in general. His life before Columbia and Adair County unfolded like an ancient document of world history. Phil's reminiscences of his life before coming to Lindsey Wilson were the makings of a best-seller. Compassion was his dominant trait and he was always the one who stood for the underdog, for the downtrodden, for those who were in need of help or just understanding.

When Phil came to work at the Adair County Public Library in August of 2019, he was already retired and hoped to find a new niche in his adopted town and county. He was not a genealogist, or so he would say, but he did have a background in his own family research and soon became adept at finding ancestors for others. With the opening of the Genealogy & History Research Center in April of 2021, Phil became the front-line with visiting researchers. He was our technology expert. We came to rely on his expertise daily and visitors came with specific needs that Phil would then tackle with abandon.

Help prevent impaired driving crashes this holiday weekend

From Erin G. Eggen

Frankfort, KY -As Independence Day arrives, Kentuckians are reminded to plan for a safe ride home if celebrations include alcohol.

Unfortunately, the holiday can turn tragic when individuals drive while impaired. It is never acceptable to drink alcohol and drive - even after just a few drinks. Making a plan for a sober, designated driver before celebrations begin will help prevent tragedies on Kentucky roadways.

"Ensuring safety on our highways requires a collective effort," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "As Kentuckians celebrate the Fourth of July, we urge everyone to celebrate responsibly so we all return home safely to our friends and loved ones."

Impaired driving crashes typically increase over holidays, so Team Kentucky is joining the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to remind drivers that "Buzzed Driving Is Drunk Driving."

A good day for a birthday trip to Lure Lodge

By Linda Waggener

July second was a very good day for a birthday friends trip to Lure Lodge on Lake Cumberland. It's normal to see animals walking or scurrying in the park on the long, winding drive from the highway to the Lodge, and Tuesday there were also a number of black vultures perched on the fence overlooking the State Dock.

We figured they were probably not there for the beautiful view. The birds only congregate when a favorite food - an animal corpse - is available. The fact that cars going right by them didn't so much as ruffle a feather indicated that meal must have been just over the fence.
