Kentucky Color: Sugar Maple Nursery

By Billy Joe Fudge

I hear folk complaining often about being bored. The definition of bored is, "made weary by dullness, repetitiveness or tediousness". My friends, life is so dynamic and so filled with variety that boredom should be an alien state of mind. We, instead, should be awestruck by the enormity and variety of life. With every step we take or change of direction in our lives, a new ecosystem is before us, above us, below us, around us and just waiting to be explored!

This mini-nursery (see photo) located on the Northeast side of a Sugar maple is a perfect example of an anti-boredom elixir. Bermuda grass (Moody grass in the Great Wooded South), Eastern red cedar sprangling outward and upward in search of direct sunlight while three little American hollies are loving the shade. The two smaller ones are probably only a year or so old and are kinda dwarfed by the clover-like Creeping woodsorrel.

Additionally, girdling roots are a real problem with Maples, especially those that have been transplanted into our urban landscapes like this one.

New Give Back Store in Campbellsville pays it forward

From Darlene Campbell

Ann Franklin, an Adair County Native, has opened a new thrift store called The Give Back Store at 113 South Columbia Avenue in Campbellsville. TGB Store is a thrift store with a twist. It accepts donations then sells them. A portion of all proceeds from the store then goes back into the community, backing charity organizations that assist local people with needs.

The store is brand new, but Ann has a vision that allows you to monetarily give to those in need without it costing you anything extra. You give away what you're not using, then she sells it to those who could use it and in turn, gives a portion of the profit to help those who can't buy for themselves. The beautiful thing is that 100% of her donations go into Adair and surrounding counties. The Give Back Store is a local business serving and helping local people.

Appreciation for Phil Hanna

By Darlene Campbell

Phil was such a blessing to our county. He chose to make Columbia his hometown, what an honor. I appreciate how much he helped me with the Writers' Day and all the conversations we had about the Arts, literature, history and genealogy. He was a vital part of the Adair County Arts Council, the Adair County Public Library and Lindsey Wilson College.

I will always remember the day we spent working at the Rosenwald School where my dad's siblings attended. Phil had photos of the students and shared so much of the school's history with me. His spirit was a light in this world and he will be missed by many.
