ACSO: Suspect in custody after Adair Co. man shot

From Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 7:32amCT, Adair County 911 received a call of a possible shooting around the 1000 block of old Montpelier Road.

Sheriff Brockman, Sheriff's Deputies and Officers with the Columbia Police Department arrived on scene to find a man with a rifle beside an outbuilding. The armed suspect was directly across the road from the reported shooting. The victim remained inside the home in need of medical assistance. EMS was unable to come on scene due to the suspect with rifle across street.

Sheriff Brockman and Deputy Chandler Staten drove past the suspect and pulled to the back of the house, while Deputy Tweedy and Columbia Officer Trevor Foster provided cover. They went inside the residence, picked up the gunshot victim, and packed him to the Sheriff's police cruiser. He was placed on the back seat and driven approximately a mile down the road to a waiting EMS unit.

Upon returning back to scene, officers with the Sheriffs Office, Columbia Police and Kentucky State Police began to approach the suspect. He refused to surrender and comply with verbal commands, and was brought down with a taser by the Sheriffs Office and taken into custody.

The victim was later pronounced deceased at TJ Samson Hospital.

Thumbnail Word-Sketch: C.S. Harris, 1861-1935

By JIM

Charles Snow "C.S." Harris, born to A.W. and Frances Harris, made his advent near Jonesville, Lee County, Virginia on the last day of December 1861. C.S. came to Adair County, Ky. in the 1880s, where he met Margaret Scott "Maggie" Murrell; they were married in the late summer of 1888, and the couple owned and farmed property just past Russell's Creek, "one mile east of Columbia" on the Stanford Road. For a few years in the 1890s, he and Mr. W.F. Jeffries partnered in the Columbia firm that later became known as Jeffries & Sons Hardware.

However, Mr. Harris is best remembered in Adair County as the founder and 20-year editor of the Adair County News, from its first issue in November 1897 until he sold the operation to Barksdale & Daisy Hamlett in the fall of 1917. Not quite a year and a half later, he, Maggie, and several of the children moved to near West Point, Mississippi, some 160 miles south-southeast of Memphis and not far removed from the Alabama state line. There, he continued farming for the remaining sixteen years of his life.

During that time, his loquacious letters occasionally graced the pages of the Adair County newspaper, always with a good word for his old home and friends of so many years.
