ACGHC would like you to share your family history

From Phil Hanna

The Adair County Genealogy and History Center invites families and individuals who came to Adair County in the last 25 years to help us build a family file for our collection. We are regularly visited by, or get queries from, persons from all over the country, wanting to research their roots and their family history in Adair County. By adding your family story, you can help answer future questions and document your life in this area.

The collections of the Adair County Genealogy and History Center document the history of Adair County, its founders, history, and, more importantly, the families, and individuals, who made Adair County into what it is today. Our collections include hundreds of family folders, organized alphabetically by family name in our file cabinets. Most are families who have been here for several generations. We are looking for information from newer families who have come to live and work in Adair County in the last 25 years.

Information on this project and the type of information to include is available in this document: 2024-03-genealogy-Family-File (PDF, 98K).

When we get "newer family" materials, they will be placed into a manila folder, labeled, bar-coded, cataloged into our online catalog, then placed into the Family File cabinets. They will show up in the online catalog of the Adair County Public Library page labeled Card Catalog/Opac at the top of home page at www.adaircountypubliclibrary.com.

History: Methodists built first church in Columbia in 1801

From the CUMC Newsletter, courtesy Doug Beard

The Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) was the oldest and largest Methodist denomination in the United States from its founding in 1784 until 1939. It was also the first religious denomination in the US to organize itself nationally. In 1939, the MEC reunited with two breakaway Methodist denominations (the Methodist Protestant Church and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South) to form the Methodist Church. In 1968, the Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church to form the United Methodist Church.

The Methodist Episcopal Church originated from the spread of Methodism outside of England to the Thirteen Colonies in the 1760s. Earlier, Methodism had grown out of the ministry of John Wesley, a priest in the Church of England (also known as the Anglican Church) who preached an evangelical message centered on justification by faith, repentance, the possibility of having assurance of salvation, and the doctrine of Christian perfection.

Methodists built the first church in Columbia, Kentucky, in 1801. It was located on Guardian Street just a few paces from the present Columbia United Methodist Church. It's quite possible that Bishop Asbury visited that church. Asbury was sent to south-central United States by John Wesley, and he is known to have visited many churches in this part of our country.

The church also served as a school in the 1850s and served as a shelter for Union soldiers during the Civil War (1861-1865). The congregation sold the property in 1872 and purchased the property on Burkesville Street where the present church sits and built a church there in 1872. The present church was built the 1960s.

Letter: What are all the purple flowers

Joyce West writes:
Does anyone know the name of the plant with purple flowers that is growing in so many fields in the county right now?
According to an article at Purdue.edu, "Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule) and purple deadnettle (Lamium purpureum) are winter annual weeds in the mint family (Lamiaceae) that are very noticeable in the field during the spring. Around April the plants flower to form beautiful patches of purple color."

By Gerard Flanagan, lead writer and communications specialist,
Office of University Communications

At the age of nine during a Vacation Bible School, Dr. Ron Ellis was asked to write down his favorite Bible verse on a yellow poster with red ink.

The verse Ellis wrote down - Matthew 28:19-20, commonly known as the Great Commission - would become his life verse.

That verse hung over Ellis' bed during his childhood, and it has guided him throughout a successful career at several Christian colleges and universities across the nation.
