Memories are being shared about pageant winners

Doug Beard's story and photos of the first Miss Lake Cumberland Pageant is bringing thoughts of each of the contestants.

Cynthia Parnell Collier grew up to be President and CEO of Mr. "P" Express, a multi-million-dollar corporation, mom of three daughters and grandmother to four little ones, all in Louisville.

Charmaine Stewart of Columbia went to Henry Clay High School with the winner, the first Miss Lake Cumberland, Brenda Brookshire. She remembers hearing that Brenda passed away at a young age but hasn't been able to find an obituary. Perhaps history writer JIM might be able to search sometime, if anyone can find it, he can.

JIM found all the names in Doug's photo, from left: Cindy Parnell (Jeffersonville), 4th; June Wallace (Somerset), 1st); Brenda Brookshire (Lexington), Miss Lake Cumberland; Hildreth Delene "Dee" Ferguson (Albany), 2nd; and Mary Allison Chesney (Monticello), 3rd.

As we receive more information about other contestants in that first event we will share and link back.

Kentuckians invited to Shop and Share on Saturday

ZeroV and its 15 regional domestic violence shelter programs, in partnership with the First Lady of Kentucky, Kroger, and other regional grocers, will be hosting the annual Shop & Share event from 9amCT to 5pmCT on February 10, 2024, at select Kroger, Food City, regional grocery and Starbucks locations.

Shop & Share is a one-day donation drive where shoppers at their local grocery stores are asked to "shop" for what they need and "share" an item with their local domestic violence program, benefitting their shelter pantry for the year ahead. It provides critical supplies for the commonwealth’s 15 state-designated regional domestic violence shelter programs. While Kentuckians shop for their game-day party items, they can also purchase items to share with survivors.

Since former First Lady Jane Beshear established Shop & Share in 2008, the event has raised more than $5 million in monetary and in-kind donations and made a positive impact in the lives of thousands of survivors.

First Lady Britainy Beshear said anyone interested in donating or volunteering at Shop & Share can visit ZeroV.org/ShopandShare to find the shopping lists and contact information for their local program. Bethany House Abuse Shelter, Inc., serves the 10 county Lake Cumberland Area Development District, which includes Adair, Casey, Cumberland, Green, Russell, and Taylor Counties.

Bethany House has the following on their needs list:
