Juvenile prisons get bad review from auditor

The investigation conducted recently by the KY State Auditor says that youth are treated with a level of scrutiny that more similarly resembles the processes of adult detention facilities.

The report noted a consistent lack of strategic direction to detention centers across the state, including the one in Columbia, leaving staff with little to no direction from outdated and inconsistent policies that do not fulfill national standards.

Tennis: LWC Women face Southeast Missouri State Tuesday

The No. 14-ranked Lindsey Wilson women's tennis team makes its Spring debut on Tuesday when they travel to Paducah, Kentucky, to take on NCAA Division I Southeast Missouri State at the Lone Oak Tennis Complex at 1pmCT. Tuesday's matchup is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

The Blue Raiders are 2-0 this season after winning a pair of matches at the Mid-South Conference Fall Tournament back in October. Lindsey Wilson defeated Campbellsville (KY) 6-1 and won the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Cumberlands.

King and Mann are ARROW Students of the Week

Cooper King and Macy Mann have been named "Students of the Week" for the ACHS ARROW Academy for the week of February 1, 2024. Congratulations to both students!

Both were nominated and elected by their teachers and received a certificate of recognition and a free drink from Indian Grounds Coffee.

T.J. Regional Health Educational Scholarship Program

T.J. Regional Health will be offering three $2,000 scholarships to high school students who are planning to pursue degrees in the healthcare, or a healthcare-related, business field.

High school seniors who live in the T.J. Regional Health service area and who are graduating in 2024 qualify to apply for a scholarship. Preference will be given to those who are pursuing degrees in healthcare or who have a desire to apply their degree to a healthcare-related field. Degrees can also include non-patient care settings such as marketing, business administration, accounting, computer science, etc.

Application materials must be completed and submitted online at tjregionalhealth.org/scholarship by Monday, March 25, 2024. Winners will be notified by April 15, 2024. Questions regarding the application process can be submitted to scholarships@tjsamson.org.

Patricia Vivian Blakeman, 91, Greensburg, KY (1932-2024)

Patricia Vivian Walsh Blakeman of Greensburg, Kentucky, daughter of the late William Patrick Walsh and Lena Alice Walsh, was born on Monday, April 18, 1932 and departed this life on Friday, February 2, 2024. She was 91 years, 9 months, and 15 days of age.

She was a member of the Church of the Holy Redeemer and a retired Custodian from the Green County School System.

Upcoming events from the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service as part of the Winter Beef Series, which highlights county research and demonstrations:
  • February 8, 2024, at 6pmCT: Basic Beef Program.
    Overview of UK on-farm demonstrations conducted at the Watson family farm. Topics will include forage management and timed artificial insemination. Guest speaker: UK Beef Specialist Dr. Les Anderson. This meeting will be held at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

  • February 19, 2024, at 6pmCT: Winter Hay Feeding to Build Soil Fertility.
    Learn about results of hay unrolling during winter feeding and the impact of soil fertility. Research conducted in winter 2022/2023 on a local farm owned by Chris Slattery. This meeting will be held at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY.

  • March 1, 2024, at 10amCT: Feeder Calf Field Day at Mike Loy's Farm
    Topics include tour of housing, feeding, and handling facilities. Discussion on health management when receiving feeder calves. Guest speaker: UK Beef Specialist Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler. Program will be held on Mike Loy's Farm located on PD Pyles Road.

FFNB warns customers of text message scam

First & Farmers National Bank is advising customers this morning that they been alerted by several customers of a scam where the customer has received a text allegedly from First & Farmers National Bank stating that a large withdrawal was made from their account and to respond to dispute it. Clicking the link takes the recipient to a web page that is visually similar to the First & Farmers National Bank login page.

First & Farmers National Bank says "These messages are fraudulent. Any customer who receives such a message needs to delete and do not respond. Remember: NEVER give out your account information, passwords, or social security numbers, unless you have initiated a call to a known number for the bank. We will NEVER text, call, or email asking you to provide this information."

It's good practice to never log in to important sites from links in emails or text messages.

Valentine's Day is a chance to find love. That's how it was once depicted. Send a card and red roses and hope the girl will be overcome with gratitude and accept a first date. Oh, no, I think that's only in Hallmark movies, and the girls are always working in a florist. Roses would be the last thing to woo her.

Finding love, according to reality shows, is not easy. Are there more people looking now than ever? Are they picky, high maintenance, needy, or have difficult personalities? Usually, a couple gets married and then finds out those things!

Many of my high school friends married young. Most are still together after sixty years or more.

The office of sheriff is a Constitutional Office in Kentucky. Here is a list of those who served as Sheriff of Adair County from the formation in 1801/02 through 2000. Some who served as deputies are also included, but that list is far from complete. Part 3 of a series:

James Murrell was the first elected Sheriff under the new Kentucky Constitution, elected in 1852 and began service in January 1853. Thomas Rhodes Dohoney began serving in January 1855, his deputies included Cager Creel. Cager Creel began serving January 1857 and continued through January 1861. James H. Reynolds began serving January 1861, deputies included Robert Burbridge, James D. Royse.

Carter new Assoc. VP for Community and Student Success at CU

Campbellsville, KY - Campbellsville University has named its first Associate Vice President for Community and Student Success - Dr. Michelle Carter. One of Carter's key responsibilities in the position is to collaborate with university leadership to emphasize diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) principles across CU.

Carter, who is being promoted from her previous role as CU's Executive Director of Academic Support, will promote student retention, fostering a sense of belonging and building a community of support for students from diverse backgrounds as part of her new position.

"I am humbled and honored to serve in the inaugural role of AVP for Community and Student Success at CU!" Carter said. "As an institution of higher learning, CU continues to distinguish itself for its quality academic programs and the strides it makes around inclusive excellence."

Baseball: LWC opens season at St. Andrews

Laurinburg, NC - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team opened the 2024 season on Saturday, February 3, 2024, with a doubleheader sweep of St. Andrews at Clark Field. The Blue Raiders (2-0) took game one 10-1 and picked up a 4-0 victory to complete the sweep in game two. On Sunday at St. Andrews (N.C.), the Blue Raiders dropping back-to-back contests to the Knights to split the four-game series.

The Blue Raiders return to the road next weekend when they travel to Faulkner (AL) for a three-game, two-day series.
