Before the ice storm we were at Kyle's concert

Back before the snow and ice storm hit and took over the news - just a week ago, but it seems like forever - we were in Greensburg listening to the music of Kyle Zornes.

Returning to non-weather news, we want to share a few more notes about that event, and the talent of the Adair native who can be heard regularly singing and playing in Lexington.

Goodnight Greensburg

2024-01-23 - Green County, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
Kyle Zornes appeared in concert at the Longhunters Tavern on the Square - right next door to the little restaurant made famous by the Kentucky Headhunters who mentioned it in their song as a place you could go for a 'slawburger, fries and a bottle of ski.' The restaurant was closed but someone had the light on upstairs.

Thank you to Wally Grant of CAUD

By Ben Arnold

Thank you Wally Grant and the Columbia/Adair Co Water District for such timely response to restore my water. It is easy to take our utilities for granted until we lose them. During this hard freeze, I lost water with guests arriving. My call to CAUD produced a response above any reasonable expectation. Wally arrived at my door after dark in that very cold and proceeded to fix my problem. Thank you, Wally.

Letter: Through trucks should be ticketed

Comments re: Last vestige of wings is gone

From Cynthia A. Meyer

From what the General Manager of the Campbellsville, KY Amazon facility told me, the drivers are not Amazon associates, nor does Amazon own the semis, but Amazon does own the trailers. Each trailer has a number, and should anyone spot unsafe driving, they can get the number from the trailer and report it.

While coming home from Amazon at night following Amazon Prime trailers, I got the number of a trailer whose driver was in excess of the speed limit (I would not try to keep up after my speedometer hit 70 mph). I reported the trailer numbers to the GM as instructed. He gave me a song that Fred Astaire himself could not have danced to! Needless to say, trucks still drive in excess of speed limits.

Letter: As a past trucker

Marie Freeman writes:
I was driving trucks before GPS. I drove for Stephens Pipe and Steel cross-country, and also drove a tri-axle dump truck for years. I know as a truck driver, especially with an 18-wheeler, if I came up to the Square I would so appreciate GPS telling me there was a bypass.

It is unfortunate that we don't use maps anymore, because if one was looking at Rand McNally, one would recognize the Bypass and avoid the Square.

There were certain areas that DOT would actually come across the CB and warn drivers that they needed to go a different direction. And it wasn't long before the word was out. I don't know if DOT still does that? It was just a recorded message that would come over channel 19 and warn the drivers. In Cincinnati if you didn't take the bypass and you went downtown without a bill of lading it was a hefty fine for a driver and the company.

Letter: Pedestrian safety is a matter of life and death

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I know folk get tired of me beating the drum on this issue but once you have seen the life mashed out of someone by a semi on a crosswalk in Columbia, then it becomes more than just an ordinance, a rule or a matter of choice by a trucker. It makes it clear that this issue is a matter of life and death!

Judge Larry, Mayor Pam, and your corresponding legislative bodies, you can join hands and facilitate changes that will improve safety on and around our Downtown Square.

Letter: Sheriff notified about threats?

Marie Freeman writes:
If there have been threats made against our county court, shouldn't Sheriff Brockman be notified in charge of an investigation?

The Sheriff is the one sitting in the court protecting. Perhaps I'm not sure of the chain of authority. And who's being threatened? Definitely leaving our county business on the sideline.

Adams recommends Civics Education requirement

From Michon Lindstrom

Frankfort, KY - Secretary of State Michael Adams has released the Secretary of State's 2023 Civic Health Assessment. The sweeping report looked at how Kentucky fares in three topics: civic knowledge, social civics and polarization. Overall, Kentucky received a C.

"Based off our findings, I am recommending to the General Assembly that we require a civics education course in high school, and require a more robust civics exam to graduate. These changes could not only increase civic participation and literacy, but could also set students up for success in other areas."

Knowledge
Kentuckians are generally more knowledgeable than the average American on civics. For example, Kentuckians are twice as likely as the average American to be able to name the three branches of government and one of their state legislators. Despite that, the number of Kentuckians that can do so is still inadequate.

The Civic Health Assessment found that just half of Kentuckians surveyed could name the three branches of government and just 49 percent could name a local elected official.

Overall, Kentucky received a C on civic knowledge.
