Letter: Trucks around the square

Joe Hare writes:
In reply to Billy's comment and as much as I would like to see thru trucks made to use the bypass, it is not illegal. Hwy's 55 and 80 are both official truck routes by Federal classification, thus they can use either route they choose. Billy I hope you can get this passed thru FCC in Washington. LOL

Letter: Report the situation

Marie Freeman writes:
Not sure if anyone has done this yet. A couple years ago I ran the GPS on a trucker app and it took a straight through the Square from Burkesville to Campbellsville on 61 https://www.gps.gov/support/user/mapfix/truck-traffic/.

1. Report violations
If your neighborhood has posted restrictions on commercial truck traffic, you may report violations to your local transportation authority or to FMCSA (1-888-368-7238). Be prepared to provide a license plate number and company name for each incident. The maximum federal penalty for failing to comply with a posted route restriction is $11,000 for a company, $2,750 for a driver.

To request a new through truck restriction in your neighborhood, please contact your local transportation authority.

2. Report the problem to device/map providers
Visit the following websites to ask the makers of GPS devices/apps and online maps to clearly label the restricted routes in your neighborhood. To reach the most GPS users, we recommend reporting the same problem at each of these websites.

Letter: Large Truck Thru Traffic

James Roberts writes:
The Columbia City Council can pass an ordinance to prohibit large commercial trucks from entering the square or downtown area unless they have a specific reason to be there. This would provide a legal reason for law enforcement to ticket offenders. Not only would it control the problem, but would bring in additional revenue in the process.

It wouldn't take long for the message to carry along the trucking industry airwaves. And also the City Council can also pass a noise nuisance ordinance for inappropriate music, brake and exhaust noise. Other small towns have done and we can too! Just my opinion, --James

Letter: Through trucks should be ticketed

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
I thought thru truck traffic was prohibited through our historic Downtown?!?! Amazon semi-truck drivers, et al should be ticketed when passing through our Downtown unless the by-pass is closed for some reason. If Amazon is routing drivers through Downtown then they should be the ones to suffer the consequences.

And I said THRU truck traffic. I, like you all know that deliveries are sometimes made on semi-trucks and that is okay, for sure.
