Lanterns and Tombstones tours wrap up for season

The final Lanterns and Tombstones tour of the season was held Friday evening at the historic Columbia Cemetery.

The only other opportunity for walking through the cemetery with a guide this year will be the annual Silent City Tour in October. Then Lanterns and Tombstones will begin again next spring.

Dave Thomas started the Friday tour off at the Triplett family plot. John F. Triplett was not so much known for business accomplishments as he was remembered for a positive attitude and good character. He was born in 1847 to Lewis and Frances Triplett. John never married and he never left home. He took good care mother and younger siblings and he was the oldest living native citizen of Columbia at his death in 1920.

Frame around the Courthouse clock tower

2023-09-05 - Columbia, KY - Photo by Linda Waggener, ColumbiaMagazine.com.
There would have been empty green space between the hillside in the historic Columbia Cemetery and the Public Square around the Adair County Courthouse in the early days of Columbia. Today many buildings and lights fill it solidly.

Green River Lake recognized by Kentucky Living Magazine

From Anita Hatchett

Frankfort, KY - Four Kentucky State Parks were recognized as part of this year's Kentucky Living 2023 Best in Kentucky awards, highlighting the best travel destinations and experiences across the commonwealth.

Green River Lake State Park in Campbellsville claimed a first place showing in the category of the best camping or RV spot in this year's Best of Kentucky awards.

In addition to winning first place, Green River Lake State Park also received second place rankings for best public hunting/fishing and water tourism spots.

"We are blessed to have so many incredible state parks across Kentucky for our families and visitors to enjoy, and I am thrilled to see four recognized by Kentucky Living Magazine," said Gov. Andy Beshear. "These four parks offer outdoor adventure, history and more - but most importantly, they offer a fun escape for families to create memories. As a dad who takes my own kids to our Kentucky State Parks, I recognize just how special these places are and I am glad to see others do too."

Letter: Response to Veronica's Star Gazing

Samantha Montgomery writes:
My family and I saw those a while back. After some Googling we were disappointed to find out that they were Elon Musk's Starlink satellites and not little green men. Still a cool sight on a night walk though!

Letter: Veronica Arnold's Night Sky Photo

Roldcat (name on file) writes:
What Veronica and family saw that night while observing the night sky is what is known as a "Starlink train". The spouse was correct, they were low earth orbit satellites. On that particular night, the train consisted of 21 satellites that were launched by Space X from Cape Canaveral Florida on Friday September 1st. Currently there are just shy of 5,000 starlink satellites orbiting earth. The plan is to deploy as many as 42,000 of these satellites to complete the mega-constellation network of satellites that will provide internet service to the entire globe.

On Sunday September 3rd, Space X deployed 22 more satellites from a Falcon 9 rocket. No word as to whether we will be able to spot those satellites as of yet. They can usually be seen orbiting in the train overhead 1-2 days after the launch date. They will then be steered to their final destination 342 miles out into space.

And yes, as the late Jack Horkheimer used to say, "Keep looking up" because the universe is a spectacular sight. You never know what you might see out there.
