Shoebox Mission begins work in Metcalfe County

Carol Perkins, Metcalfe County Shoebox Mission Coordinator, shares items needed for Christmas boxes. She writes, "Metcalfe's Operation Shoebox Mission (Part of Samaritan's Purse Mission) is kicking off early this year. Last year we sent 1150 boxes worldwide, spreading the Word of God, often to places where no missionaries are permitted to go. We can do this again.

"First request: if you have tee shirts, pencils, promotional ideas, etc. left over from an event (Bible School, campaigns, reunions, etc. no matter the size or dates, we would love to put them in each shoebox, especially the boys. You can drop them by the Chamber Office or send me a message.

Downtown Days festival vendor updates

Columbia's Downtown Days festival committee reports that there are no more vendor spaces available with electricity for 2023 Downtown Days the second Saturday in October. They do still have spaces available just none where power is available. For questions message them on Facebook.

The Food Court for 2023 is full. They are overwhelmed with the interest and excited to announce that we are at capacity.

Children in KY rank 15th in national statistic on underprivileged

Kentucky Ranks Among the 15 States with the Most Underprivileged Children
According to WalletHub Study

With August being Child Support Awareness Month and 1 in 6 children in the U.S. living in poverty, the personal-finance website WalletHub today released its report on 2023's States with the Most Underprivileged Children, as well as expert commentary.

In order to bring awareness to the condition of underprivileged children throughout the U.S., WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 26 key measures of neediness. The data set ranges from share of children in households with below-poverty income to child food-insecurity rate to share of maltreated children.

Candace Rhiannon Sneed, 40, Adair County, KY (1983-2023)

Candace Rhiannon Sneed, AKA Sport, 40, of Columbia, Kentucky, died August 4, 2023 at University of Louisville Hospital.

Candace excelled in lots of things in her short life. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, but mostly sitting at home. She lit up any room she walked in. She was fast with her witty words and could make the gloomiest day bright. She graduated from Adair County High School in 2001 with a Who's Who Award, won multiple awards for horticulture and then graduated from PJ School of Cosmetology in 2013. Candace also worked in the family business, Moore's Pool Room.

ACMS SBDM Council to meet Thursday

Adair County Middle School's School-Based Decision Making Council will be having a special called meeting at 4:30pmCT on Thursday, August 10, 2023. The meeting will be held in Room 138 of Adair County Middle School, 322 General John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY.

The purpose of the special called meeting is to interview for a vacant teaching position.

Special Called Fiscal Court Meeting on Friday

The Adair County Fiscal Court will meet in special called session at 9amCT on Friday, August 11, 2023, in the basement of the Adair County Annex building located at 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY.

Items on the agenda include setting county tax rates and the hiring of temporary office staff. The public is invited to attend.

Genealogical Society Textiles Meeting a success

The August meeting of the Adair County Genealogical Society on Monday evening was a success. Thirty-one attended and the presentations were great. Thanks to all those who participated and who graciously shared their items. A few of these will be on display for a short time, so if you were unable to attend, come by and take a look.

Dennis Graham Davis, 86, Campbellsville, KY (1936-2023)

Dennis Graham Davis of Campbellsville, Kentucky, son of the late Eural Brown Davis and Evelyn Maxine Ennis Davis, was born on Wednesday, September 9, 1936, in Green County, Kentucky and departed this life on Monday, August 7, 2023, at the Taylor Regional Hospital. He was 86 years, 10 months, and 29 days of age.

Kenneth Eugene Harris, 87, Greensburg, KY (1936-2023)

Kenneth Eugene Harris of Greensburg, son of the late Hazel Blaine Harris and Helen Coffey Harris, was born on Monday, February 3, 1936 and passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at Taylor Regional Hospital. He was 87 years, six months, and five days of age.
