Opinion: Some thoughts on the occuational tax By Joyce Coomer This should be called payroll tax so people are more aware of what it is. Government has a fondness for obfuscation. While I am never in favor of additional taxes, I am aware that for the local government to keep things like roads and buildings in good repair, taxes are necessary. Add in employees, insurance, utilities, and all the little odds and ends that are utilized in any workplace, and the need for taxes is always there. I've heard the usual complaints that the powers that be are wanting to create jobs for their family/friends/buddies (That has occurred in every government entity since the dawn of time.), to the working people are already overtaxed, and one that has puzzled me - the government is wanting to take our property (which they can already do through eminent domain so I have no idea how this got tied to a payroll tax).
