Opinion: Some thoughts on the occuational tax

By Joyce Coomer

This should be called payroll tax so people are more aware of what it is. Government has a fondness for obfuscation.

While I am never in favor of additional taxes, I am aware that for the local government to keep things like roads and buildings in good repair, taxes are necessary. Add in employees, insurance, utilities, and all the little odds and ends that are utilized in any workplace, and the need for taxes is always there.

I've heard the usual complaints that the powers that be are wanting to create jobs for their family/friends/buddies (That has occurred in every government entity since the dawn of time.), to the working people are already overtaxed, and one that has puzzled me - the government is wanting to take our property (which they can already do through eminent domain so I have no idea how this got tied to a payroll tax).

All that being said, the county most likely does need the payroll tax.

I'd go with the one percent, and make it permanent. There is always something unexpected that needs to be done, and simple day-to-day expenses will keep rising. And, whether anyone wants to admit it or not, property taxes will be increased at some point, with or without a payroll tax being in place.

I don't have access to payroll information for the county, nor for other counties, so have no idea how the pay scale for Adair County government employees compares to other counties. I do think people need to be paid fairly, and be expected to do their jobs to the best of their abilities, remembering that they are employees of the citizens of the county.

Yes, someone will have to be hired to keep track of all the paperwork involved if a payroll tax is approved. That would be where some of the money would go. The sheriff's office should always be adequately staffed, for crime isn't going to suddenly disappear. Other departments also need a sufficient number of employees to keep everything running smoothly.

Even though I am against new taxes, I'll admit that a payroll tax is probably needed. If funds are used wisely, the citizens of the county will be pleased at the results.

So, to the magistrates, enact a one percent payroll tax, make it permanent, and use the funds wisely.
