Letter: Medical cannabis

Ann Pearson writes:
So many suffer from things like seizures and to allow the use of this drug to treat it is no different than allowing the use of a drug created by a pharmaceutical company. Prices are so high and so many suffer because they can't afford the medication. This would help a lot of people lead a more normal life and at a price they can afford. You can misuse anything.I think it's a great idea!

Genealogy is fascinating, get involved

By Billy J. Hagy

I've traced back from the beginning of our school at Knifley Grade Center which began for me and our class in 1962, 2nd semester. There were 30 of us students in 2nd Grade. It turns out that I am cousins of one denomination or another beginning with a 3rd cousin and up to a 12th cousin - out of the 30 kids in my class I'm related to 21 of them.

I never had a clue of this growing up. There's a few of them that I cannot find a trace on them or their families. There were eight grades in the school, first through the eighth grade. Out of those eight teachers, I'm cousins with SIX of them.

Betty Jo Coffey Phillips, 1st grade teacher, No relation. Iva Overstreet Jones, 2nd grade teacher - 8th cousin on my Hagy side. Ms. Blades 3rd grade-No relation; Ms. Lois Sullivan Smith 4th grade - 10th cousin, on my Dickerson side. Mr. James Knifley, 5th grade teacher - 6th cousin, on the West and Rich family side. Mr. Paul Corbin, 6th grade teacher, 6th cousin, on West & Rich side. Mr. Presley Chelf, 7th grade teacher - 7th cousin, on the Dickerson side. And finally, Mr. John Dunbar, 8th grade teacher, 5th cousin, on the Hagy side, and lo and behold his wife Mary Baker Dunbar a 5th cousin, also on the Hagy side.

Winter 2023 is ending with a little snow

By Linda Waggener

As we head into the last full day of winter 2023, it's cold, gray and giving us snow flakes in downtown Columbia. At 8:30amCT the flakes are tiny, floating lazily on the breeze as if to say, "Ha, I'm done with you yet."

The Columbia Magazine weather forecasts a chance of flurries before 11am, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high all the way up to - near - 39. Tonight we look for a low around 18.

According to the Almanac, the March equinox happens on Monday, March 20, 2023 at 5:24 P.M. EDT. This is the astronomical beginning of the spring season in the Northern Hemisphere and the autumn season in the Southern Hemisphere.

Carol Perkins: I'm Finished

Previous Column: The Baby Visit

By Carol Perkins

I have made a decision, as Spring approaches, that I am through with flowers and flower bulbs. I have set out enough for my yard to look like a picture out of Southern Living, but I have an Iris here and a tulip there.

Guy tilled up a large space for wildflowers and we probably sowed 100 pounds of seeds, but all I saw were a few that would have come up on their own. Sunflowers won't even grow in the sun. Cannons? One came up. My buttercups never disappoint, but they have a short life. Even my trees die. I should fill the yard with artificial flowers. Then the yard would look like a cemetery.

Flowers make me happy. Roses, even the knockouts that are supposed to grow anywhere, disappoint. The buds fall off as quickly as they bloom. Regular roses don't even attempt to produce. I might get one bloom late in the year. They look so pretty in the garden shops, but I've wasted too much money and time trying to get them to live. I have vowed to fill my flower boxes and let my flower beds grow over. Guy is thankful.

Some things are not within my reach.

Poetry: Water helps maintain

By Robert Stone, 18 March 2023
A sonnet in remembrance of Clara Ellis
Our bodies are a lot of water held
together by this magick we call life.
at birth the waters break, new life expelled,
at death the waters wash, the end of strife.

In gentle drops or forced through nozzles tight
the range of feeling seems to have no stop;
from narrow stream we jump with lowly flight
to ocean waves unlimited backdrop.

Propelling self through water helps maintain
good rainge of motion, strength, and bold delight,
in youth achievement joy which will remain,
in age attainment wise so says hindsight.

To have a pond or lake at your back door
connects your outward sight with inward core.
