Severe weather does not discriminate, it can strike any hour, and in any season. Be prepared, know the risks, and have an emergency plan.

The list below has the location of 14 Tornado Safe Rooms in Metcalfe County. If you do not have a safe spot, know which safe room is the closest to your home and/or work, it may save your life and the life of others!

RS First Baptist Pastor Naylor to give CU chapel address

Christian Naylor, senior pastor of Russell Springs First Baptist Church in Russell Springs, and two-time graduate of Campbellsville University, is the featured speaker for the university's weekly chapel service at 10amET Wednesday, March 1, 2023 in Ransdell Chapel, 401 N. Hoskins Ave., Campbellsville. The public is invited to all chapel services this semester.

He received a Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication with an emphasis in broadcast and digital media in 2018 and a Master of Theology in 2021. He joined Russell Springs First Baptist in 2019 as the youth minister.

Softball: LWC triumphant in doubleheader sweep of MO Baptist

At Marilyn D. Sparks Park, the Lindsey Wilson softball team improved its season-long win-streak to four games with a two-game sweep of Missouri Baptist University on Friday.

Za'Kiya Sizemore and Alexis Garayzar shined at the plate with a combined six hits, five runs batted in, and three home runs, while Abigail Cruz and Grace Adams each pitched complete-game efforts as the Blue Raiders jumped to 6-4 overall on the year.

Lindsey Wilson faces a quick turnaround with a non-conference doubleheader at Georgetown College on Saturday afternoon.

19 new hires for Adair Juvenile Detention Center

Franfort, KY - In February, Gov. Andy Beshear raised detention center youth workers' salaries to a minimum of $50,000 annually and reclassified the position title to correctional officer. On February 23, 2023, DJJ announced that 59 individuals have graduated the training academy and reported to their assigned facility. Another 22 individuals began the training academy on February 20, and are expected to graduate March 17, 2023. Of the new recruits, 19 have been hired for the Adair Juvenile Detention Center.

"A core component of ensuring safety is having enough qualified, trained individuals on duty, and we are excited to welcome these new team members to the juvenile justice team," said Gov. Beshear. "Our youth deserve a Kentucky that will fight for them so they can achieve a second chance and a brighter future. I pledge to always do the right thing for the betterment of our youth, and our staff who are committed to doing this essential job."

DJJ's training academy includes six-weeks, 128 hours of instruction focused on a variety of topics including cultural diversity/implicit bias, mental health training, crisis prevention, de-escalation techniques, conflict resolution, riot and hostage situations, searches and contraband, report of abuse and neglect, fire safety, suicide prevention, the Prison Rape Elimination Act, report writing and observation skills, health services protocols, behavior management and legal issues. The academy also includes two weeks of on-the-job training.

New case of measles confirmed in Kentucky

Frankfort, KY - On Friday, February 24, 2023, state health officials announced a confirmed case of measles identified in a Jessamine County resident. The resident, who is unvaccinated, attended a large spiritual revival on Asbury University's campus on February 18, 2023. No further information about the individual will be released due to privacy concerns.

"Anyone who attended the revival on Feb. 18 may have been exposed to measles," said Dr. Steven Stack, commissioner of the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH). "Attendees who are unvaccinated are encouraged to quarantine for 21 days and to seek immunization with the measles vaccine, which is safe and effective."

All reported cases of measles are thoroughly investigated in Kentucky. KDPH is actively collaborating with Asbury University, Jessamine County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Mark A. Smith, 55, Columbia, KY native (1967-2023)

Mark Anthony Smith of Russell Springs passed from this life Thursday, February 23, 2023, at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, following a short illness. He was 55 years old.

The funeral service will be held at 2pmCT on on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at H.E. Pruitt Memory Chapel, 202 N. Main St., Jamestown, KY, with Bro. Jim Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Smith Memorial Cemetery in Russell Springs.

Friends may visit from NoonCT until time of service at 2pmCT on Sunday, February 26th at H. E. Pruitt Memory Chapel in Jamestown, KY.

Basketball: LWC men to challenge Thomas More in MSC quarterfinals

The Mid-South Conference men's basketball tournament moves to its final site this weekend in Bowling Green. Eight teams remain in the quest for a championship, including the Lindsey Wilson men's basketball team.

The Blue Raiders are riding high off their first postseason victory in five years and are next set to challenge the defending conference tournament runner-up, Thomas More University in the quarterfinals at 7:30pmCT.

The winner of Saturday evening's game will advance to the semifinals and play the winner of Freed-Hardeman University and Campbellsville University on Sunday night.

For fans making the trip to Bowling Green, please be aware that tickets must be purchased in advance through the Mid-South Conference website.

George L. Barnett, 74, Campbellsville, KY (1948-2023)

Mr. George L. Barnett of Campbellsville passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, February 22, 2023 at the St. Matthews Care Center in Louisville. He was 74 years old.

The family has chosen cremation and all services will be private.
