Gene Mitchell Smith, 68, Columbia, KY (1954-2023)

Gene Mitchell Smith of Columbia passed away on Friday, February 10, 2023, at T. J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow. He was 68 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 2pmCT on Sunday, February 12, 2023, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg St., Columbia, KY. Cremation to follow the service. Mr. Smith's cremains will be buried beside his parents in the Columbia Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be on Sunday after NoonCT at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

General Fund and Road Fund receipts for January 2023

Frankfort, KY - State Budget Director John Hicks reported on February 10, 2023, that General Fund receipts rose 6.2 percent in January compared to last year. Total revenues for the month were $1,288.1 million, $75.1 million more than was collected in January 2022. Receipts have now grown 5.8 percent for the first seven months of Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23). When adjusting for a one-time legal settlement received in September of FY22, General Fund receipts have risen 8.8 percent thus far in FY23.

All the major receipts categories had increases with sales and gross receipts accounting for more than $37 million of the total $75.1 million increase.

KSP: Fatal Collision at US68/W. Main in Campbellsville

On February 9, 2023 at approximately 5:43pmET, Kentucky State Police (KSP) Post 15 Troopers responded to a two-vehicle injury collision at the intersection of US 68 and West Main Street in Campbellsville.

The preliminary investigation revealed that Steve Hovious, age 58 of Campbellsville, was traveling east on US 68 in a 2000 Honda Accord when he failed to stop at a traffic control light. Mr. Hovious then collided with a 2018 Ford Explorer that was attempting to turn to travel west on US 68. The Ford Explorer was being operated by Courtney Gumm, age 32 of Nancy.

Baseball: Rayno's big day propels LWC past Olivet Nazarene

At Egnew Park, the Lindsey Wilson baseball team opened the home portion of its 2023 schedule in style with a two-game sweep of (RV) Olivet Nazarene.

The pair of victories push the Blue Raiders to 4-1 overall, their best five-game start to a season since 2015.

Austin Rayno and Chance Stayton dominated the Tigers' pitching staff with three hits each, including the game-winning walk-off home run by Rayno in the nightcap.

On the bump, three different pitchers combined for 22 strikeouts for the locals as the Olivet Nazarene offense was held to five runs on nine hits across both games.

ACMS Academic Team take honors at Governor's Cup

The Adair County Middle School Academic Team took home honors in the 5th Region Governor's Cup Competition on Saturday, February 4, 2023. The competition took place at Green County Middle School, where four individuals completed written assessments in their chosen subject area.

Hannah Kotter (8th grade) placed fourth in Language Arts. Riley Andrew (6th grade) and Natalea Kaylor (8th grade) captured 5th and 6th place in Arts and Humanities. Christopher Armenti (6th grade) was named the 5th Region Champion in Social Studies with his first-place finish.

The ACMS Quick Recall team members Hannah Kotter, Natalea Kaylor, Summer Graziano, Sarah Goforth, Daria Cheng, Suzy Kotter, Riley Andrew, Elaine Cook, Pierce Stotts, and Christopher Armenti earned an impressive second-place finish.

Finally, the Future Problem Solving team including Hannah Kotter, Natalea Kaylor, Sarah Goforth, Suzy Kotter, Riley Andrew, and Daria Cheng were awarded Region Champions with their first-place finish. All members will move on to the State Championship in March at the Galt House in Louisville, Kentucky.

Boil Water Advisory Milltown Church Road area

Update: Boil Water Advisories lifted

Time Issued: 8:30 pm


A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for consumers of Columbia Adair Utilities District for customers on 942-3374 Milltown Church Rd and all side roads in between. The advisory has been issued due to a main line break. Following such an event, the potential exists for bacteriological contamination of the water supply therefore this Boil Water Advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure.

Until further notice, boil all water used for drinking and cooking, bringing the water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using. This advisory will remain in effect until the situation has been corrected and test results have shown the water to be of an acceptable quality.

Philip Hanna presented the program 'Art in the Genealogy Center' at the February Genealogy Society Meeting.

Many artists and examples of their works were included in his slide presentation, some were well known and others were a surprise.

Gertie Alyne Brewington Collins, 94, Cumberland County, KY

Gertie Alyne (Brewington) Collins of Burkesville, Kentucky passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the Cumberland County Hospital in Burkesville, having attained the age of 94 years, 5 months and 17 days.

She was born in Burkesville on Tuesday, August 21, 1928 the daughter of Marvin & Clyde (Spears) Brewington. She was a member of the Burkesville Church of Christ and she was a dietician for the Cumberland County Hospital.
