Owenelle Gift Fund provides 6 WKU scholarships for CCHS grads From Tommy Newton Bowling Green, KY - Six Casey County High School graduates received scholarships to Western Kentucky University from the Owenelle Gift Fund for the 2022-2023 academic year. Recipients include Dylan Carman, Mackenzie Cundiff, Anna Howard, Adam Price, Emily Smith and Miracle Stinson. The donors who established the Owenelle Gift Fund grew up in Casey County and attended Casey County High School and WKU. Growing up in Casey County instilled the values of hard work, integrity, perseverance and an appreciation for simple joys. Their teachers at Casey County High School inpsired continued learning and exploration of the bigger world. After graduating from WKU, their careers took them beyond Kentucky and outside the United States. Culturally enriching experiences exposed them to different ideas and reinforced their belief that mankind is good. Emily Smith, a junior from Columbia, KY, is pursuing a degree in Criminology and Sociology with a minor in History. "This scholarship allowed me to continue my education at WKU and experience college in a supportive environment," Smith said. "It made me realize it is important to give back to education for future generations." Committee considers legislation to reduce vaping in schools By Jordan Hensley, LRC Frankfort, KY - Whether you call them vapes, vape pens or electronic cigarettes, the popular activity among teenagers is drawing some criticism in Frankfort. Rep. Mark Hart, R-Falmouth, was joined by retired U.S. Marine Corps. veteran and current Pendleton County High School instructor Brian Melton at the Interim Joint Committee on Education on Tuesday to discuss the dangers of vaping and possible legislative solutions to the problem. "We're in the process of drafting legislation, which I hope to have ready and available to be filed first of January," Hart said. Reminder: Promotional signs are restricted on right-of-way From Wes Watt Bowling Green, KY - Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) crews are removing illegally placed items along state-maintained right-of-way areas. Political candidates, residents, business operators, realtors, and property owners along US and KY routes are reminded no signage is allowed on right-of-way other than official highway signs and items approved through a permit process. In particular, as we approach the November election, campaign signs must be placed beyond right-of-way limits. Right-of-way fences are included with this restriction. The District 3 mowing cycle is still ongoing, and crews are out with mowing equipment. Crews will not mow around illegally placed items. They will be removed. Items placed on right-of-way areas create significant delays for the mowing crews and are potential hazards for mowing operators and passing motorists. We are looking for people or businesses that would be interested in bidding and purchasing the ham gift baskets at this year's auction. The Adair County 4-H Program will be holding its 11th 4-H Country Ham Auction on Tuesday, November 3, 2022, starting at 6pmCT, at the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service located at 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY. This year we have 27 4-H Youth and 4 Cloverbuds who will be auctioning off their hams. Each youth will design a basket that will go along with the ham they produced.
