Faces on the Courthouse Columns

By Mike Watson

Since many courthouses were used to store military supplies and to house soldiers, many were burned during the Civil War. Adair came close to losing her courthouse to Confederate General John Hunt Morgan on one of his passes through the county... In the years after the War, our courthouse was in dire need of replacement or remodeling in the 1860s and the Court took up the question at least once, but money was tight and they delayed.

At a special session of the Adair County Court in August 1884, Judge A.E. Sallee and James G. Conover, John Eubank, E.W. Burton, Peter Tarter, W.A. Richards, G.W. Carter, C.W. Pile, William England, W.S. Dudgeon and J.F. Morris, justices of the peace, moved to build a new courthouse to replace the old structure which was in poor condition. William Henry Hudson & Columbus Stone bid to build the new courthouse and the Court accepted their bid of $17,486.50.

Carol Perkins: My Elvis Moment

Previous Column: The Front Room

By Carol Perkins

When Jon and his boys were here in June, I bribed them into going to see the Elvis movie with a promise to eat at White Castle. I didn't expect the movie to be wonderful, because who can play Elvis but Elvis? I was pleasantly surprised. The actor said in interviews about the months of research he did to get into Elvis mode, and his effort was obvious.

Those who lived through the Elvis era will have difficulty accepting someone else in the role. It's the same with the Beatles. Duplication is impossible. However, the movie is a hit, and I have no doubt that because of the family's endorsement, it will make millions. What this movie HAS done is bring back Elvis's music for a new generation. My grandchildren heard songs new to them.

The only time I saw Elvis in concert was two months before he died.

The Peaches Feud on Keltertown Road

By Phillip Coffey

"Come on boys let's go get some peaches." What a profound statement Grandfather Cassius "Cash" Coffey had made to Danny Coffey and myself. We were first cousins at pre-school ages. Danny and I knew nothing of what might follow.

The three of us loaded up Granddaddy Coffey's old Plymouth "Primmer" and off we took to pick some 'golf sized' white peaches. We proceeded to travel the mile or so of primarily dirt and some gravel road to pick the succulent fruit. The Peach Trees were located along the Keltnertown Road near Great-Uncle Benny B. Coffey's house. Uncle 'Ben' was a senior Brother to Cassius by about 17 months.
