Phillip Coffey - Take Up Mathematics

Take Up Mathematics - By Phillip Coffey
(Writing is fun, let the mind wander)

All the 'what ifs', 'buts', 'however(s)' suddenly with a whim tossed into the seas and oceans.
While off in the distance to the north and south the glaciers accelerate their rate of melting.
Climb high up into the mountains, maintaining the unnatural balance of deforestation and construction.
No more flat fields in the "Breadbasket of the world"-Midwest of U.S.A., all covered with water.

Roll up your denim sleeves, leave the thickets-purchase a harpoon-take up fishing for the white whale
Of indifference, call up Captain Ahab, ask him for directions on how to skin and cook up all this blubber.
No more thickening gravy formed by a tablespoon of flour, mixed with milk, maybe salt and bacon drippings.
Sift through all those conjunctions, prepositions-shelf them for a while then to the moon-take up mathematics.

85 years ago: Grocery stores galore!

by JIM

As the summer solstice came and went and June began the segue into July 1937, much of the talk around Adair County no doubt centered around the just-opened Dr. Pepper bottling and distribution center in Columbia, bringing direly needed employment and a ray of economic sunshine to the area.

Mr. O.E. Huddle had just been elected as superintendent of the Columbia city schools; Dr. Mercer announced the schedule for typhoid fever inoculations; and Ben Green, manager of Lerman's, and Tom Brown, owner & pharmacist of Brown's Drug Store, headed up a drive to get a Chamber of Commerce "or some similar body" established in Columbia.

Meanwhile, on and near the square, no fewer than six Columbia grocery stores advertised in the June 30 edition of the Adair County News, to-wit:

ACSO: Accidental death of Elk Horn man

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Friday, June 24, 2022, Adair County Sheriff's Deputy Derek Padgett and Deputy Chandler Staten responded 20 miles North to the 5400 block of Speck Ridge Road in Elk Horn, Kentucky, to a call of assistance where a male was trapped under a vehicle.

A preliminary investigation determined William Thomas Brown, 61, of Elk Horn, was at his home working on his 2013 Chevrolet Cruze. It was determined Brown used a Hydraulic Bottle Jack and a piece of wood to lift the vehicle off the ground. The ground in the area of the jack being unlevel caused the bottle jack to be unlevel in lifting the vehicle.
