A Boil Water Advisory is in effect for customers of Columbia/Adair Utilities District, at Bomar Height and Tutt St and all connecting roads between, Grady Loop, Guardian St., West Frazier, East Frazier, Greensburg St, Marshall St, Pall St, Wall St, Rice Dr, Mack St, Mitchell St, Walker St, Hudson St, Sunset Dr, Stults St, Curry St, Allen St, 101 Westwood Dr, Bridge Port Circle, Hurt St, . Woody Ave, North 61 Bypass to Lampton Lane, Old Burkesville Loop, Baker St, Yates St, 306 Magnolia Dr, Bluegrass Dr.

The advisory has been issued due to Main Line Break.

Following such an event, the potential exists for bacteriological contamination of the water supply therefore this Boil Water Advisory has been issued as a precautionary measure. Until further notice, boil all water used for drinking and cooking, bringing the water to a rolling boil for three minutes before using.

This advisory will remain in effect until the situation has been corrected and test results have shown the water to be of an acceptable quality.

May 8-14 proclaimed Nursing Home Week in Columbia

The week of May 8 through May 14, 2022, has been proclaimed as "Nursing Home Week," in Columbia, Kentucky, as the result of a proclamation issued by Mayor Pamela Hoots. In the signing of the proclamation with Mayor Pamela Hoots are Summit Manor employees Deb Smith, Misty Sewell, Dana Helm, Jamie Turner, Lana Roy, and Latasha Harden; as well as elders Eula Moss, Rose Willis, and Rebecca Melton.

Extension homemakers attend annual meeting

On Thursday, May 5, 2022, six Adair County Extension Homemakers attended the Lake Cumberland Area Annual Meeting in Taylor County. Among them was Kathy Jones, who presented her poster on her well-earned mini-grant project that benefited the local Ruth House in Columbia.

Additionally, our County Homemakers President, Sharon Harris, and Area International Chairman, Betty Knifley, were recognized for their service to the area homemakers.

This was the first Area Extension Homemakers Annual Meeting since the COVID pandemic. Also, Adair County Extension Homemakers will be traveling this week to the State Homemakers meeting in Owensboro. We are also very excited to have 16 Cultural Arts pieces competing this week at state.

Summer readers have chance to win $529 college savings

Frankfort, KY - Four Kentucky children will win $529 each to put toward a college savings account this year by participating in a summer reading program at their local public library.

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA), the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA) and KY Saves 529 have launched the Explore Oceans of Possibilities College Savings Summer Reading Sweepstakes as part of the 2022 summer reading program at participating public libraries across the commonwealth.

The sweepstakes, which runs May 16 - Aug. 12, 2022, will award four $529 college savings accounts to Kentucky children and young adults 18 years old or younger. In addition, each winner's local public library will receive $500 toward future reading programs.

Proclamation: Nursing Home Week

The week of May 8 through May 14, 2022, has been proclaimed as "Nursing Home Week," in Columbia, Kentucky, as the result of a proclamation issued by Mayor Pamela Hoots.

The proclamation has been designated to recognize the essential roles of skilled nursing care centers. As a part of the proclamation, the Mayor would like to recognize the importance of Signature Healthcare-Summit Manor to our community.

Green Thumb: Growing the Next Generation of Gardeners

Adair County Cooperative Extension Service

The Adair County Extension Master Gardeners will be providing a gardening educational opportunity for kids this summer through a series of three classes. Kids will get their hands dirty as they learn about growing plants, soil, composting, and bugs!

Classes will be held at the Adair County Extension Office, 409 Fairground Street, Columbia, KY, with each class beginning at 10amCT, and each class will last two hours. Kids will have craft/project items to take home with them from each class.

Dates for program are as follows:
  • Tuesday, June 7, 2022
  • Tuesday, July 12, 2022
  • Tuesday, August 9, 2022
The classes are free to attend but registration is requested to help prepare for materials. To register, contact the Adair County Cooperative Extension Service at 270-384-2317. All youth ages are welcome to attend, accompanied by an adult.

Kentuckians urged to donate to nonprofits serving them, their communities during today's 24-hour online giving event

Lexington, KY - Nonprofit organizations from throughout the commonwealth are participating today in the tenth anniversary Kentucky Gives Day statewide online fundraising event. The 24-hour online giving campaign provides 263 participating charities the opportunity to raise as much money as possible today from midnight (EDT) through 11:59 p.m. - all through a single website: www.kygives.org.
