Carol Perkins: Engelbert By Carol Perkins We were early. Too early. I thought the concert started at seven, so we were there at 6:30. It started at seven-thirty. Guy let me out in front of the Taft Theatre in Cincinnati while he parked. I stood with the white-haired ladies, stepped around canes and walkers, and waited while keeping my cane out of the path of others. We were there to see Engelbert Humperdinck the day after his eighty-sixth birthday. Since he was a young man and my friends and I were even younger, I have followed him and swooned as if I were sixteen. While some were pining over Tom Jones, we were obsessed with Engelbert. Obsessed might be too strong a word. With time to spare, I people-watched. Most were our age, and some younger ones (60s) were there with their mothers. The lady in front of me remembered seeing him fifty-five years ago when she took her mother to a concert. Her daughter now brought her. He took the stage slowly.
