Reminder: Slow down, move over for emergency vehicles

Frankfort, KY - In an effort to protect those who protect us, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety (KOHS) is joining the Kentucky State Police (KSP) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote the "Slow Down and Move Over" message to Kentucky drivers.

"Every day on our roadways, emergency responders and public safety personnel put their lives at risk to protect the citizens of the commonwealth," said Governor Andy Beshear. "Slowing down and moving over is something we owe these dedicated professionals who provide a valuable, and often dangerous, public service."

Kentucky passed its Move Over law in 2003 requiring motorists to move over to the adjacent lane when approaching an emergency vehicle or public safety vehicle with flashing lights (KRS 189.930). If changing lanes is impossible or unsafe, motorists must slow down and use caution. Failure to do so can result in fines, jail time or both (KRS 189.993 (8)).

Clay Hill cleanup continues following December tornado

By Gerard Flanagan

Campbellsville, KY - A drive past Clay Hill Memorial Forest would seem to indicate the area is relatively unchanged since a devastating December tornado swept through, uprooting large amounts of trees and closing Clay Hill's nearly five miles of hiking trails.

But, behind the scenes and out of sight, a great deal of work has been done to clean up the damage, according to Jonathan Moore, director of Clay Hill Memorial Forest.

"Just before Christmas I met with our Advisory Board to discuss how to address the tornado disturbance to the forest," Moore said. "We discussed baseline principles for approaching management and then discussed management options."

Moore said Clay Hill Memorial Forest's approach "might be quite different" from the approach a private landowner would take.

2022 Spay/Neuter grants available to county governments

By Kirk Hilbrecht

Frankfort, KY - The Kentucky Animal Control Advisory Board (KACAB) invites Kentucky county and metropolitan governments to apply for available grants to spay and neuter dogs and cats.

The board will award up to $3,000 to each government on a competitive basis. Grant applicants do not need to offer matching funds, however governments with matching funds that exceed the KACAB grant amount will be favored candidates.

Governments may partner with non-profit organizations to obtain the best use of resources. Applicants are encouraged to seek out the best price possible for the average anticipated cost per alteration. Grant amounts will be based in part on alteration costs. Favorable ranking will be given to mandatory spay/neuter programs.

Spay/neuter grant-candidates can learn more about this program and download the grant application at kyspayneuter.com.

KSP: Injury collision closes parkway - investigation report

By Sergeant Jason Morris

The Kentucky State Police investigated a two-vehicle injury collision on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway near Columbia on Tuesday around 2:44pmCT.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2011 GMC being operated by 41-year-old Daniel Lloyd of Glasgow, was stopped on the right emergency lane traveling East on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway. Lloyd was attempting to turn from the emergency lane into the U-turn when he pulled into the path of a 2005 Freightliner being operated by 36-year-old Bengie Fletcher of Edmonton, causing the GMC to overturn and ejecting two of the occupants. Fletcher's vehicle continued off the roadway over an embankment coming to rest in a creek.

Officer Casey Tooley investigated the collision, and was assisted by the members of Kentucky State Police, Adair County Sheriff's Office, Columbia Police Department, Adair County EMS, Breeding Fire Department, Kentucky Department of Transportation, and the Kentucky Division of Environmental Protection.
