Governor: More attention on workplace safety can save lives

By Kevin Kinnaird

Frankfort, KY - On this Workers Memorial Day, Gov. Andy Beshear is asking Kentuckians to take time to reflect upon the lives of those lost to workplace fatalities.

The Kentucky Labor Cabinet, U.S. Department of Labor, OSHA and other agencies observe Workers Memorial Day on April 28 every year. It's a time to honor those whose lives ended too soon, often due to a workplace accident that could have been avoided.

"At the end of the day, every Kentucky worker deserves to make it home safe to his or her family," Gov. Beshear said. "As we take time today to grieve, we must think about the impact these tragic losses have on families, communities and co-workers, and do much more from an educational standpoint to avoid workplace injuries and deaths on the job."

Letter: CASA is wonderful organization

Comments re: Help children as a new Advocate volunteer

By Mary Bardin

I am a CASA volunteer. CASA has such a positive impact for the children and courts. The more volunteers we can get, the more help we can provide to these children.

A CASA volunteer has face to face interaction with the children in the home and at school activities, and becomes the eyes for the courts. CASA works side by side with Cabinet for Family Services, but volunteers actually are the "hands-on person" for the Cabinet. The Cabinet is not able to have the same close contact as CASA volunteers, due to their overwhelming client caseload.

Pinwheels at CU for National Child Abuse Prevention Month

By Chosalin Morales

Campbellsville, KY - "We come out here every April as a department to show our support for our children. Setting up these pinwheels brings awareness to the cause and represents our commitment to ending child abuse," said Dr. Kimberly Mudd-Fegett, associate professor of Social Work at Campbellsville University, as she and the Carver School of Social Work set blue pinwheels on Stapp Lawn April 20 to commemorate Child Abuse Awareness Month.

"It's a reminder across the state of Kentucky and our community that if you see something, say something," Mudd-Fegett said. "As social workers, Carver School of Social Work, members of the community and as a university, we want to show that we can do more for our children."

The blue pinwheel, a national symbol of child abuse prevention, represents the childhood all children deserve.

Fundraiser for keyboards for ACMS students

Mr. Konsavage at Adair Co. Middle School has started a fundraiser at DonorsChoose.org to purchase keyboards to help teach music, performance, and recording to students at the school.

Mr. Konsavage says, "Over 80% of our middle school student population takes my music class. Many have never had the experience playing an instrument. I believe that all people have musical ability and can, with the right guidance, create their own music. With your help, these keyboards will allow students a greater means of self-expression and self-awareness through music-making."

The fundraising project opened for donations on Monday, April 25, 2022, and has two donations so far. The goal is to raise another $4,692, and the middle school will only receive the keyboards if this project is fully funded by August 24, 2022.

To find out more about this project, or to make a donation, visit www.donorschoose.org.
