Coomer family's experience at the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home

David Coomer and Jon Coomer share their family's experience while their father, Willard Coomer, was a patient at the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home.

By David Coomer and Jon Coomer

Our dad was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he battled that as long as he could. We kept him home and took care of him as long as we were able to. His last treatments knocked the wind out of his sails, and he was hospitalized for a week. We did not think he was going to make it through that. We were faced with the decision of what we were going to do next.

We started to look at long term care, because there was just no way we could bring him home, and there was no one we could hire to look after him. We were going to be discharged from the hospital, so the social worker there gave us some options and put us in touch with the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home.

Letter: Great article about the Big Creek Sabbath-School

Jim writes:
Great article about the Big Creek Sabbath-School! It may have originated in a Kentucky newspaper and subsequently was picked up and republished in other papers, including the Thursday, April 13, 1907 edition of the Fitchburg Daily Sentinel, Fitchburg, Massachusetts, under the same headline ("Solid Work").

ACSO: Scam alert

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

Over the last few days, the Sheriff's Office has seen an uptick in online scams. We are getting several that involve emails. While it may look like it comes from a familiar name, the email may be just slightly different. They are asking for updated information for payroll and personal identifiers.

Please be vigilant of these scams and do not reply to untrusted emails. Never give your personel or banking information over an email. If in doubt call the source and verify they are actually trying to contact you.

It is unknown if it is connected to world events but it is likely we will continue to see a rise in cyber crime. Please safe guard your personal information.

By Tony Rose, Agent for 4-H Youth Development
Adair County Extension Service

4-H Summit is one of the premier leadership opportunities for middle-school-aged youth. The program gives youth the opportunity to network with peers, learn leadership techniques and strategies, and master new skills. This year, the 4-H Summit took place on March 17-19, 2022, and was held at the Lake Cumberland 4-H Educational Center. Myla Curry, Ty Coleman, Katie Kean, Kelsey Breeding, and J.T. Loy were in attendance representing Adair County. Noah Newell from Adair County was also in attendance. Noah is a member of the State 4-H Teen Council and helped to plan and conduct this year's Teen Summit.

Summit is a wonderful opportunity for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade youth to learn more about leadership opportunities that are open to them when they become senior 4-H members.

Old clipping on Big Creek Sabbath-School, Adair County

Thanks to David for sending this article. Comments re: More on West Big Creek School, 1948-1949 and Mike Watson: A remarkable Sunday school

By David von Rosenberg

I found your article on the Big Creek Sabbath-School based on an internet search after finding the following undated, unattributed clipped article inserted in a family bible. The clipping could date from the late 1800s; the other item I found in the pages was a ribbon commemorating Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
Solid Work
The American Sunday-School Union, in the year 1855, organized the Big Creek Sabbath-School, Adair County, Ky. This school has continued to meet every Sabbath, except for a short period during the civil war. It is located in the country, many miles from any railroad. From its organization until now, about 700 scholars have been enrolled, so that the average attendance has not been large. From this little Sunday School in the backwoods there have gone:
  • 7 Ministers of the Gospel
  • 1 Missionary of Amer. S.S. Union
  • 1 Candidate for V. Pres. U.S.
  • 1 Lieut. Governor of KY
  • 72 School Teachers
  • 13 Merchants
  • 10 Lawyers
  • 13 Practicing Physicians
In their youth, 200 scholars in this School united with the church, and no person connected with Big Creek Sunday-School has ever been convicted of any crime. Some who received their moral training here, now occupy important positions in other States, in colleges, banks, and as successful business men. Small Sunday-Schools in the country make noble contributions to the Church and the State.

ACSO: Man arrested after theft of vehicle and collision

By Sheriff Josh Brockman
Adair County Sheriff's Office

On Saturday, March 19, 2022, the Adair County Sheriff's office was assisting the Columbia Police Department in trying to locate a vehicle that had been stolen from Fairground Street and was involved in a collision.

Chief Deputy Brandon Hitch located the stolen Dodge truck on KY 551 after observing a gate that looked like it had been driven through. The operator had left on foot. The vehicle was released to Columbia Police, who are carrying the investigation.

Shortly after that, Deputy Tracy McCarol received a call of an abandoned vehicle sitting in Bull Run Lane. Upon arrival, Deputy McCarol checked with the vehicle's registered owner to find that the 2000 GMC was also stolen.

While recovering the vehicle with the owner, a male was located coming out of the woods and detained by deputies. He admitted during interview to stealing both of the vehicles and being involved in the collisions on Fairground Street.

Letter: It's a small world

Jada Foster writes:
My daughters and I were coming through Cookeville, TN today and stopped at Walgreens where we struck up a conversation with a man there. He asked where we were from and we said Columbia, KY and he said he knew some fine people there. Ed and his brother Ralph Waggener. His name was Rich Buford.

He’s originally from Celina and he used to work for Ed as a kid when he owned a paper there. Small world isn’t it? - Jada
Jada, thank you so much for your letter and you are so right, it is a small world. This brings back wonderful memories of the Celina, TN Clay Statesman newspaper years. It was my first official editorship after having trained at the Edmonton Herald News while I was a Metcalfe County High School news writer and later worked part time while in college. Ralph Waggener had sold a business of his own and would become a newspaper partner and become its next editor and publisher and I hope he'll write about his years there.

The way Columbians came to be in Celina was a story in itself. Ed partnered with his brother-in-law's brother, Jodi Richards, and they bought the EHN from its Greensburg owner, Walt Gorin. Jodi soon sold his part to Ed because he had to go on with his business and political goals in Bowling Green. Ed then partnered with his cousin Pete Walker who loved starting new businesses. He organized a meeting with Joe and Ida May Peak, owners of the Celina Globe, who wanted to sell their letterpress, tabloid weekly newspaper. They worked out of their two story home beside the Cumberland River.

The trip for the final negotiations included Pete and his lovely wife Edith Cundiff Walker, friends and authors Henry and Janice Holt Giles and Ed and me. We made the journey to meet with the Peaks and learn about the opportunity. Joe shared that he traded his and Ida's leftovers to feed the pigs of his weekly columnist who'd pick up the hog slop and leave off his news. After their discussions and efforts to put monies together, he sold the paper, not the printing press nor the beautiful old home beside the river, I believe, for $2,000. It was the start of working with and getting to know many truly wonderful people in a beautiful area. - Linda Waggener
