Tommy Druen: Dogs are good for people

Previous Column: The lesson I have taken from 2021

By Tommy Druen

Christmas came early for me this year. A couple of weeks before, my wife and I ventured to the small community of Cromwell, Kentucky and picked up an eight pound, bouncing baby boy . . . with black and white fur and a wagging tail. Our lives, and our floors, have not been the same since.

Colonel is an 11-week-old sheepadoodle. Like many of us, he got a little fluffier over the holidays. Unlike most of us, he's right at double his weight from mid-December. And after his first visit to the veterinarian, we realized that the size we initially anticipated was a low estimate, as the doctor told us he should end up around eighty-five pounds. He's going to be a big boy.

He is goofy and awkward, with his oversized paws getting him into precarious situations. He has nipped both our children, chewed on shoes, and attempted to herd the cat on more than one occasion. But he also likes to snuggle, take rides and looks pretty dapper in a bow tie. We may be only a few weeks into this relationship, but sometimes love at first sight really does exist. We're going to be best friends.

I have been around dogs all my life. Some of my earliest memories involve a couple of my dad's beagles.

COVID-19 News Brief & Vaccination Update 12/28/2021

By Sam Price
Lake Cumberland District Health Department

The Omicron variant of COVID-19 was identified in Kentucky recently. It will only be a matter of time before it becomes the dominant strain here. While it seems it is highly transmissible, vaccination is still the best strategy to protect yourself and your families from serious illness and possible hospitalization. If you have not yet received your vaccination, please consider getting it now. Also, remember that boosters are strongly recommended for everyone after 6 months.

Of today's 116 reported cases, 89 (77%) were unvaccinated and 11 of today's cases (9%) were in individuals 18 years of age or younger. Please take the necessary precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones. Consider getting the vaccine if you are eligible and haven't, and wear a mask when in indoor settings where there are large crowds.

Statewide Testing Positivity Rate: 12.61%.

Columbia Mayor's Report: State of the City 2021

By Mayor Pamela Hoots

Mayor's Report: State of the City 2021 -- We have been fortunate this year to have several (and, I mean several) good things happen for our community.

Parks and Recreation

1. We have signed the Memorandum Agreement with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on the Land and Water Conservation grant. This grant is for a splash pad at the City Park on Fairgrounds Street. The grant is for $113,900.00. It is matching at 50%, which does include some in-kind in that amount.

2. We have signed the agreement with Lindsey Wilson College for additional usage around the track at the City Park at the Fairgrounds. We plan on a walking trail. Thanks to LWC for working with us on this project.
