Letter: Courthouse/Isenberg corner

Ann Curtis writes:
Thanks to Jim for all the information on this photo of the Courthouse/Jeffries Bldg/Isenberg lot! Leave it to him for ferreting out all the details! I had also wondered if that is what looks like a white picket fence on the right side of photo, under the locust trees?

Letter: What a great photo!

JIM writes:
The Jeffries Building, on the left, was completed near the end of 1902. The tree branches along the right edge suggest the picture was taken before late July 1908; at that time, the Adair County News mournfully announced:
"The Isenburg corner looks like it has lost its best friends. The locust trees which have stood there for many years have been cut down, giving it a naked appearance. The property belongs to Mr. J.O. Russell, who had the trees removed in order to get the proper grade for a concrete pavement. The work is in progress and in a short time will be completed."
(In 1908, the old Isenburg storehouse still occupied the entrance corner of Jamestown Street and the square. The following year saw the rickety edifice follow the locust trees into oblivion as a prelude to construction of the Russell & Co. building.

"Pinky!" Ace and Rosie said in unison.

The small woman in black removed her mask, revealing soft dark bangs and a long braid. "You left the code on my answering machine and..."

"James Allen is dead," Rosie blurted. "I killed him."

"You murdered your husband?" Pinky squawked.

"Not on purpose," Rosie said.

There was a faint knock at the backdoor.

"It's Clyde," Pinky said.
