Flocking South

2021-11-27 - Adair Co., KY - Photo by Veronica Arnold.
By Veronica Arnold

It's cold enough now, winter is almost upon us. The earth prepares for a well deserved rest. The birds begin their long arduous and dangerous journey south for better weather and greater chances of food.

Taken on black Friday I observed a flock of black colored birds flying South. (Look in the top left quarter of the frame) Fly safe feathered friends. We will be here for your return. I often think the V could be a good omen for victory or other good battles fought. Thankful and encouraged.

In Fairplay on the day after Thanksgiving.

Night of Hope at Russell Springs United Methodist Church

By Bro. Dennis Price
Russell Springs United Methodist Church (The Church at the Springs)

As we head into the holidays, many of us are walking through grief, loneliness, anxiety or any number of negative emotions. The "holiday blues" aren't myths, seasonal sadness is a very real and serious condition experienced by many every year. Due to the pandemic, just here in Russell County, we have lost over 60 of our fellow community members. We also know many in this community have lost loved ones outside of Russell County. Covid-19 has had devastating effects and not in death alone. But the pandemic is not the only thing that brings about feeling's of distress and pressure this time of year. When we think about all we have lost and how our lives have been impacted, it is no wonder people are feeling hurt and depressed.

Because we know these things are true, we will be hosting a "Night of Hope" at the Russell Springs United Methodist Church. We want to offer everyone the opportunity to come together for a time of reflection and to be reminded of the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

The service "Night of Hope" will be at 6pmCT on Thursday, December 2, 2021, in the sanctuary at Russell Springs United Methodist Church, 206 Jamestown St., Russell Springs, KY. As part of the service we will have music, candle-lighting, a time of prayer and a short message on Hope. There will be people available if you want someone to pray with you or for you, or if you just want to talk.

Remembering major leaguer Elmer John Smith

Billy Joe Fudge sent us a heads' up about a recent addition to the Adair, Cumberland and Metcalfe County Ky History and Genealogy Facebook page, where Judy Smith has posted the obituary that the late great Paul Hayes wrote in 1984 for Major League Baseball Player Elmer John Smith (1892-1984).

Smith, who was born in Sandusky, OH, is best remembered for helping the Cleveland Indians win the 1920 World Series and the New York Yankees win the 1922 American League pennant and 1923 World Series. According to Wikipedia, Smith's grand slam in Game 5 of the 1920 series was the first grand slam in World Series history.

Smith ended his baseball career in 1932, and settled into a career with an engineering firm in Shaker Heights, Ohio, until the late 1950s. Some time in the 1970s, he and his wife, Ruth Hanrath Smith, relocated to Columbia, where they lived until his death on August 3, 1984.
